WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a new telecommunication/broadband technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. WiMAX allows a user, for example, to browse the Internet on a laptop computer without physically connecting the laptop to a wall jack in the same way as Wi-Fi.

WiMAX & Wi-Fi may seem similar (as well as sound similar), they are actually aimed at different applications.

WiMAX offers a long range broadband which can cover many kilometres. This can deliver a connection from broadband providers to an end user.

If Puget Sound is Falling Down: An Article on Earthquake Studies

William Steele, the Seismology Lab Coordinator at the University of Washington Geophysics Program, has a son, Chris, who goes to elementary school. He comes in sometimes and he loves to do stuff. It seems hed recently put a sticker on one of the labs monitors, and his father had some trouble accessing the equipment. What an excuse! Steele never did get into the program hed wanted to show me.

December 4th of last year there was a magnitude 5.1 quake in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Aftershocks were felt in Washington State. I had headed out to the UW in search of information on recent earthquake activity in the Puget Sound region.

Oregon is relatively quiet next to Washington. But this year, weve had an enormous amount of activity in Oregon, counter to past patterns. Klamath Falls couldnt be noisier, said Steele, ticking off the numbers: September 4th, 5.9; Sept. 20th, 5.9, 5.0, 4.3; Dec. 4th, 5.1; and Christmas Day, 4.0, 3.4.

Most of our local activity in the Puget Sound region is recorded by the UWs lab equipment. They have an emergency preparation computer program called Beat the Quake, hailing from the land of quakes, California, which has suffered through quite a lot of severe earthquake damage lately. Thats the program Steele had trouble running on his computer. Fortunately, the UWs Seismology Lab has far more emergency preparedness information so we dont have to begin from ground zero in the likely event of an earthquake. Steele is also the Public Information Officer covering quakes through the UW. We have 135 seismic stations throughout Washington and Oregon, currently operating, and were expanding. We really cover a tremendously broad area.

They locate quakes precisely, then determine the magnitude (quantity of total energy released by the quake), location (area affected by the quake), and epicenter (location on the surface directly above the focus, or place where an earthquake originates.)

They collect data about the geology of the region as well. Its critical data. This lab is an educational center for graduate students in geophysics. They also educate citizens. School groups bring in students, and Steele speaks at civic organizations, encouraging people to take action and make themselves safer from earthquakes.

Of course, the big question everyone asks is, When?

Were not able to put down a date. Its more complicated because three types of quakes occur in the Puget Sound region. The most common are deep earthquakes.

Signals travel through the planets crust, sometimes all the way from the other side. Events from anywhere show up on their helicorder sheets, making an analog, a 24-hour record, of every quake. For example, the Klamath Falls quakes, which are very near California on the Oregon coast.

We cover the Cascade Range, and have multiple stations on every volcano. We have a good station at Mt. Baker, adequate to cover the region. Earthquakes around volcanoes are very common.

The lab shares data with California for quakes occurring on the border of California and Oregon. Were part of the Washington Regional Seismic Network. Steele showed me a map of Pacific Northwest Seismicity, 1969-1991. There were huge blue clusters in Puget Sound. What are those, I asked. Moderate, shallow, and deep quakes. The deep clusters are in the Puget Basin.

Deep earthquakes, the ones you really tend to write home about, are the largest in magnitude as measured on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. The values usually range from 1.0 (not felt) to 7.0 (extreme damage to buildings and land surfaces). They can go even higher, as they have in recent deep quakes in Alaska.

Heres whats happening in Puget Sound: about 300 kilometers or more out from the coast is where the deep quakes are generated. Theres a ridge 500 to 700 kilometers out called the Juan de Fuca Ridge, and new material, new sea floor, is being deposited all the time along it. It pushes the Juan de Fuca plate toward the North American plate underneath the Seattle area. The Juan de Fuca plate moves an average of two inches a year, towards us, lifting the other plate.

A border zone locks it up, an interface between the two plates that stops the oceanic plate, making it subduct beneath us, forcing the ocean plate down into the mantle of the Earth. This boundary is called the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and extends from the middle of Vancouver Island in British Columbia down to Northern California.

The Earths mantle lies beneath its brittle crust. Its semi-solid, due to tremendous heat and pressure. Our Cascade volcanoes are probably there because of plate subduction beneath us. The push deforms the crust and builds up tremendous stresses. Right now, the coast of Washington is rising. Its bulging up. The oceanic plate is cold rock and the shock of the two forces meeting leads to deep earthquakes. Washington has recently experienced two large ones, in 1949 and 1965.

A flyer from the lab states that roughly 1,000 earthquakes per year are recorded in Washington and Oregon. Between one and two dozen of these cause enough ground shaking to be felt by residents. Most are in the Puget Sound region, and few cause any real damage. However, based on the history of past damaging earthquakes and our understanding of the geologic history of the Pacific Northwest, we are certain that damaging earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 or greater) will recur in our area, although we have no way to predict whether this is more likely to be today, or years from now. Steele thinks it will be soon.

In 1949, there was a severe earthquake in Olympia, 7.1. Eight people were killed and there was millions of dollars worth of property damage. The quake was located 70 kilometers deep.

In 1965, there was a magnitude 6.5 quake between Seattle and Tacoma. Both earthquakes were felt as far away as Montana. But there were no aftershocks, as is usual during a deep quake. The infamous aftershocks, known to catch people in the middle of recovering from a bad earthquake, happen during land-based shallow earthquakes. The ocean-based shocks occurred once, causing ground tremors that lasted several minutes. The 1965 quake killed about five people, and again there was millions of dollars of property damage. Other deep events, difficult to calculate from records of the times, occurred in 1882, 1909, and 1939. Every 35 years or so a 6.0+ magnitude quake occurs beneath Puget Basin. The whole region along the coast will shift at once. When it finally builds up enough pressure to kick up, itll be a big one.

Eighty percent of the quakes on the planet happen along the Pacific North West Rim, which is referred to as The Ring of Fire because of all our volcanic activity. In 1964, one year before this areas last big event, south-central Alaska generated a monster 9.3 quake, shaking the ground for twenty minutes, generating tidal waves that decimated Sewards coast, affected 34,000 square miles, and killed 143 people. And theres been recent large quakes in Cape Mendecino, California, and Parkfield, California, infamous for ground shaking, in 1992.

Brian Atwater of the USGS (United States Geological Service) and the UW geology department has done studies along the coasts of Washington and Oregon. Hes found a kind of layered soilwhat he foundghost forests killed by the last big quakes. Subduction zone material covered by coarse black sand. A layer gradually turned into forest floor and then the sand layer. As bulging continues, coastline rises, and low-lying areas are flushed clean by salt water. Stress released during the quake makes the coastline subside by seven or eight feet. It drops. If youre living at five feet above sea level, its not a very comfortable thing.

Earthquakes also generate large tsunamis, or tidal waves; the biggest ones, generated by larger quakes, can rip up an entire coastline for miles, wiping out bridges, roads, and buildings. The really great subduction zone quakes, 9.0 or more, only occur about once a century on the face of the planet. Strangely, a big quake may result in only about three-and-a-half minutes worth of strong ground shaking, which doesnt sound like much. One recent California quake was only seventeen seconds of strong ground motion, a 7.1 quake. A 7.0 quake releases the equivalent of 199,000 tons of TNT in energy; a 9.0 releases 200 million tons, or 17,000 atomic bombs worth of force.

The difference between an 8 and a 9 is greater than the difference between a 2 and an 8, because of the logarithmic scale. The force increases exponentially. It gets 30 times greater each time. I wondered if it ever goes up to 10.0.

By carbon-14 dating organic matter in ground and sea levels, scientists can determine approximate dates for events going back 10,000 years. Finding clues about these earthquakes involves both painstaking research and educated guesswork.

Research has recently identified a Seattle fault which generated a large quake between 1,000 to 1,100 years ago. There were landslides, and a huge seiche-when something big falls in the water, creating waves like tsunamis. Large block landslides occurred in forests. Restoration Point on Bainbridge Island rose twenty feet from Puget Sound in seconds during that event.

Buildup from glacial ice sheets once covering the continent make it difficult to analyze shallow crust faults. But geologists are pretty sure there are two major Seattle faults. The biggest one runs from the north tip of Mercer Island through Eastgate to the Kingdome, just north of West Seattle. The other fault runs through White Center, parallel to the bigger one. In 1872, an estimated 7.3 shallow quake caused what seismologists call felt reports from observers, the only evidence of some older quakes. Native Americans tell legends about what must have been some very sizeable earthquakes and tsunamis.

Nowadays, all the real-time telemetry (automatic transmission of data from a distant source to a receiving station) comes through in the back of the lab, where Steele poured me a cup of Starbucks coffee at their metal sink in a very equipment-crowded space. Relays zap activity energy in nanoseconds to the lab. Before people in a region know whats going to hit them, we do. The helicorders monitor 23 stations on analog. We focus on volcanoes. All stations, including the ones on helicorders, go onto the computer system in the next room. The discriminator in the back takes FM carrier signals and separates them from seismic signals, leaving an amplified seismic signal. It goes to the front room, changing into digital information the computer can read.

If it picks up a jump (a skip in the needle on the helicorder) on a station, it checks other stations and records all data, whether theres a signal or not. If its a big quake, it does estimates of the magnitude etc. via programs, beeps the people (like Steele), and sends information to seismologists around the region. Steele might hear a beep anytime.

As I drank my coffee, Steele told me hes a grad student, his lifes partner works, and together they support their family, renting a house in Wallingford and raising two kids. Its a rewarding job, butthe rewards are not monetary. Nonetheless, he feels treated as a colleague by everyone, and has a good working relationship with all his fellows at the lab.

About earthquake preparedness, Steele is adamant. The secret is not fear and loathing in Seattle, and that we have to hide under our beds. Lets get ready. Our schools need to get to the point where we can withstand a 7.4 earthquake. How many little bodies do we need under bricks before we start spending some money? Right now, there are no definite laws enforcing earthquake building codes, if the building code years ago said you could pile bricks without mortar on top of each other.

Unreinforced masonry creates structures that fall during even moderate earthquakes. The entire wall of a school can fall down and kill students. A brick that falls three stories doesnt slow down, he said, referring to the death of a boy during the 1965 earthquake. Steele is certain such deaths are preventable.

At least six schools in Oregon have unreinforced structures, bricks that can fall and fill a doorway, blocking the exit. Retrofit them, or tear them down and build another school. If a school has been considered unsafe for a quake lately, they can sell it, and it becomes a senior center. No laws stop that. These buildings need to be brought up to code or taken down. Deaths will happen unless we act. India just had a 6.8 quaketens of thousands dead. There needs to be water and food stored away to last 72 hours. You need to get under a table and ride it out; get down on the ground, under something; check to see if you smell gas, and turn it off; electricity, too.

You should get to know your community resources, Steele said. And in case of severe aftershocks, if youre in a building you should wait until the shaking stops, and then get out. Lots of people are killed by falling debris while evacuating buildings.

What does Steele see in the immediate future? I expect more of the same. Probably some quakes greater than 4.0 in the Puget Sound area. While weve been talking, thereve been events in Klamath Falls,. As I write this, there are aftershocks east of the Dec. 4 sequence starting in Klamath Falls. The question is, are we going to recognize the danger and do something about it, or are we going to wait until we have an adequate death toll? Id like to see a dedicated plan and some leadership from the state. Itll be a lot of money.

Steele said a colleague of his said it best: The next great disaster will happen as soon as we forget about the last one.

Learn what causes injuries: parts falling off building exteriors and interiors; flying pieces of broken glass; overturning bookcases; unanchored water heaters; storage facilities; anything made of glass; fires from damaged gas lines; electric lines; wood stoves; chimneys; toxic fumes.

Create emergency preparedness plans: find safe spots in your home; identify escape routes; plan two ways out of each room; pick two places to meet, outside your house and outside the neighborhood if you cant return home; show everyone how to shut off water, gas and electricity; practice your plans, now.

Reduce earthquake hazards: evaluate your home; strap water heaters and gas appliances down; remember, stiff items snap; place heavy objects on lower shelves; anchor everything heavy; anchor hanging objects; support community earthquake preparedness.

Businesses, schools, daycares, neighborhoods, churches, clubs: hold workshops. Assemble a disaster preparedness kit: store food, water, clothes, a first aid kit, a radio, flashlights, and batteries, good for 72 hours of use, in your car trunk, home, and office. During/after an earthquake: stay calm; dont panic or run. Earthquakes are usually preceded by loud sounds, so take quick action. You actually have about two seconds, so get ready for that earthquake now to protect yourself and others. Stay where you are: drop, cover and hold something solid, or take immediate cover under a heavy desk or table, in a doorway, hallway, or against inside walls. Turn away from glass. Keep away from chimneys, windows, tall bookcases, and objects that might fall.

Evacuate only after the shaking stops. Use the stairs, not the elevator. Remember, aftershocks may occur at any time. Listen to a radio or TV for instructions. Outdoors: move away from buildings, trees, and utility wires. Sit on the ground until the shaking stops. Flee inland immediately when near a coastline. Check for injuries. Do not move seriously injured people unless theyre in danger. Indoors: evacuate damaged buildings, as aftershocks could cause additional damage, or buildings can collapse.

Do not re-enter a building until its declared safe by responsible authorities. Dont use the telephone except for emergencies; stay off the phone. Check for fires. Have a fire extinguisher, and know how to use it. Check utilities: gas, electric, and water lines may be broken. Gas: do not use matches, candles, open flames or electric switches indoors, because of possible gas leaks. If you smell gas, open windows, leave, and shut off the main gas valve, which is usually outside.

Electricity: if wiring is broken, shut off electricity at the main switch. Dont touch anything near downed or damaged lines. Water: if water pipes are broken, shut off the supply at the main valve outside. Use water from ice cubes, water heaters, toilet tanks (if they dont contain chemical cleaners). Clean up spills. Attend carefully to spills of potentially harmful materials such as medicines, drugs, and household cleaners. Provide adequate ventilation, as chemicals may combine to produce toxic gas. Remember to assist others in need.

Champagne, or sparkling wine as it is known outside of France, certainly conjures up romantic images. Champagne has a reputation for being THE beverage to serve at most special occasions. Champagne should be served cold. Most experts suggest 45 degrees Fahrenheit as proper serving temperature. Bottles may be stored on their sides or upright. It is best not to store Champagne in an area where the temperature fluctuates greatly. Incidentally, a great tip for rapidly chilling a bottle is to fill an ice bucket around the bottle with equal amounts of crushed ice and ice water. Always keep the champagne on ice, not in the freezer, between servings.

Color and sweetness are characteristics of champagne that one sees on every bottle. Champagne is not always made from white grapes, hence the different colors. There are a lot of people who wonder why some bachelor degrees, when you get them, designate you as a bachelor of arts and other bachelor degrees designate you as a bachelor of science. Well, the answer is very simple.

A Bachelor of Arts degree goes to somebody who gets a bachelor degree in any non-technical, or science related field. A Bachelor of Science degree goes to somebody who does get a degree in a science related field. The designations are set up by the colleges themselves.

So, what's the difference? Does it really matter?

The answer to that question may shock you. It matters very much.

The reasons will not be immediately apparent to the student, but when he or she goes into the real world to get a job, they are going to be in for a rude awakening if they're looking for a specific type of job and don't have a bachelor of science degree.

If you're scratching your head wondering why this even matters, the answer is as follows. Most Bachelor of Science programs are a little more intense than a Bachelor of Arts program. In other words, in addition to the degree having to be in a science related field, the degree itself will contain more required courses than a Bachelor of Arts degree. Of course this varies from college to college, but within each school the bachelor of science program is always more intense than the bachelor of arts program. There may be one more required course per semester, or more science courses required. The bottom line translation is, the program is harder to get through; in some cases, a lot harder.

So why does this matter? Well, there are certain jobs, such as in the fields of engineering, chemistry and physics, just to name a few, where if you look in the classified ads in your local paper, it will clearly say, "bachelor of science degree required". So if you graduated college with a bachelor of arts degree, you won't be able to apply for that job. Oh, you can still send in your resum, but don't expect to be called in for an interview.

Now, here is where this becomes very important. There are some colleges that will allow you to get a Bachelor of Arts degree in math, which is technically one of the sciences. The program doesn't have as many requirements. So when you graduate, while you technically have a degree in one of the sciences, because of the fact that you don't have a bachelor of science degree, you will not be eligible for that particular job that says "bachelor of science degree required".

It may seem like a nit picky thing, but these companies want to know that you can get through the tougher curriculum. They want to know that you have a good chance of being able to handle the job that you're applying for. Is there a really big difference between a bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degree? In an undergraduate program, probably not too much. But in the minds of the companies, where there is so much competition for jobs, it is a big deal.

Blood Pressure: Treatment for Elderly People

Does age in treating high blood pressure in elderly people make having in this treatment more difficult and is this age group more likely to have side effects from antihypertensive agents than their younger counterparts?

In general, people in their 70s and older tolerate all drugs less well than younger people because their kidneys and livers eliminate drugs less efficiently and their bodies are generally less able to tolerate big changes, including changes in blood pressure. Other concerns are that some elderly people may be more likely to make mistakes in remembering to take their tablets as prescribed and also many have to take other drugs for other health problems, which may cause complicated interactions between different drugs.

On the other hand, elderly people generally respond to blood pressure lowering medications just as well as younger people, perhaps rather more so. They often show a good fall in blood pressure with smaller doses of blood pressure lowering drugs than are required by middle-aged people.

Most commonly used blood pressure lowering drugs seem to be relatively trouble-free and effective for the elderly, particularly thiazide diuretics at low doses, which are almost always the best first choice in this age group, as well as for younger people. Their theoretical drawback is that they tend to make the underlying body chemistry of diabetes worse, but even for elderly people who already have diabetes, the benefits greatly outweigh harmful effects. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) also seem to be effective and (so far - in drug terms they are still fairly new) trouble free, except for provoking a dry cough in about a quarter of people who do not have either asthma or heart failure.

The drugs which are best avoided are the alpha adrenergic receptor blockers (alpha blockers), which can cause fainting in the elderly and the drugs acting mainly on the brainstem - methyldopa and clonidine. Elderly people starting on blood pressure lowering medications for the first time are unlikely to be prescribed theses drugs acting mainly on the brainstem, but those who have been on medication for some years may still be taking them, because they were the best drugs available for them when they started their treatment.

Methyldopa commonly causes liver damage in elderly people, often bad enough to cause severe jaundice. As well as making them ill, it can be very difficult to sort out the diagnosis, because blood test results in this condition closely resemble those for other common causes of jaundice such as gallstones, virus infections of the liver and side effects of other drugs. It should be avoided in elderly people and unlike other blood pressure lowering drugs, even people who have taken it for many years without trouble should probably switch to less risky alternative by their late 60s.

Clonidine often causes depression. As elderly people develop severe depression more commonly than younger people do and more frequently go undetected, this drug should be avoided when medication is started for the first time in this age group. People who have taken clonidine for years, staring in middle age, can reasonably continue as they get older, providing they don't have any trouble.

Keeping Your Eyes on Your Goal

Of all the techniques I've pulled out of my bag of therapist tools and tricks, this is one of the best for clients who have trouble staying focused on their goal. Why? Because it allows a person to recognize the vast difference between wishful thinking, wanting something, and being willing to really and truly work toward a specific goal. I heartily recommend you read this twice, the first time to learn what this technique is, the second time to actually do it. You will be sure to learn something about yourself if you do.

Select a goal or dream you want to achieve

This should be one you would like very much to achieve, but which, until now, you have not taken the time, or found the time, to accomplish. It can be anything from painting to learning a new language. If you're not immediately sure what that goal would be, take a moment right now and allow your heart's desire to bubble up from deep inside, trusting that your intuition will give you a goal you need to look at more closely today.

Explore WHY that desire is important to you

Let us say that you have long wanted to own your own business. As you ask yourself "why," the first answer that quickly comes to mind might be because you want to earn more money. Yet going into business for yourself is risky and many small businesses fail. Money as a goal may not be potent enough to sustain the tremendous amount of work needed to build a business until it becomes successful. Asking yourself again why you have this goal, you may feel it is because all the rules and regulations imposed upon you by your employer seem unnecessary and even oppressive. Yet government rules and regulations for starting and running your own business might bring you even bigger headaches. Therefore, as you continue to ask yourself why the idea of being your own boss appeals to you, you may discover that money and regulations have nothing to do with it. Rather, you may find that what is basic to your heart's desire is the freedom you will have. So "freedom" is really your goal.
For another example, let us say you have often thought of writing a book, but because you know that getting a book published takes a tremendous amount of effort and determination, you can't seem to get started. However, as you go through the process of examining why you want to write a book, you may discover that what you thought was the goal, a published book, is not at this time nearly as important as that of taking time to do something creative.
Getting down to your basic motivation allows you to generate the energy needed to follow through with the nitty-gritty, disciplined work that is often an essential part of achieving a goal.

Create an image of your goal that expresses your motivation for reaching it

Since you will use this image to help mobilize the energy needed to accomplish the goal, it needs to be a strong and accurate image or symbol.
Here are a few examples of what your image might look like. If you desire freedom by owning your own business, your most potent image would be to picture yourself doing something you could only do if you had the freedom to set your own schedule. If your heart's desire is to go to Europe, the image of money needed to get there probably isn't as powerful as imagining yourself watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. If your goal involves improving a relationship, such as wanting to stop pointless arguments with your brother, it is important that you remain focused on yourself. In this case you might want to create an image of yourself feeling calm and serene while your brother is standing near you, doing whatever it is he says or does that, up until now, has caused you to get upset and argue.
To explore what this could be like for you, I suggest you take a moment now to create in your mind's eye an image of how you want your life to be different, making the image as clear as you can.

Imagine now that you are standing at one end of a long room and the image is on the wall at the other end

On the wall at the far end place your image, perhaps pretending that your goal is a photo you have framed and put on the wall. For example, going back to our illustration of getting into business for yourself so you can decide when you will do what you want to do, you might imagine a picture of a person playing golf with the word "Weekday" superimposed on the picture. It can actually be a real picture. For the goal of going to Europe, you could have a picture of Buckingham Palace.
Even if you do not experience this image as a picture you can see in your mind's eye, allow yourself a clear sense of what you would like to achieve or how you would like to be different. Look at the wall and imagine as fully as possible that it is there.

Walk toward the image (in your imagination or in reality)

As you slowly walk across the room, stop every few steps and say to yourself either silently or aloud, "I hope I can . . ." and then in your own words describe your heart's desire. Notice how your body feels when you say, "I hope I can . . . "

Come back to where you started and walk toward the image a second time

Now as you slowly walk toward the picture of what your life will be like in the future, say, "I should be able to . . ." and then state that which you long to achieve. Stop every few steps to repeat the phrase. Again, notice how your body feels when you say, "I should be able to..."
Come back to where you started and walk toward the image a third time
Again, slowly walk toward your goal, this time saying, "I want to . . ." and then state what it is you want. Again, imagine you stop every few steps and repeat the statement, "I want to . . ." Remember to notice how your body feels when you say, "I want to. . . "

Come back to where you started and walk toward the image a fourth time

Finally, walk toward the image and this time say, "I will . . ." and then state what you desire to achieve. As you stop every step or two and repeat the statement, "I will . . ., " notice how your body feels.

As you went through this last walk across the room saying "I will," did you notice a fairly significant change in the way your body felt from how it felt when you first began to walk toward your goal and said, "I hope?" If you did, you realize that hoping is passive. It has no more power to affect change then blowing out a birthday candle and wishing for something.

Also, thinking you should do something is mostly good for creating guilt when you don't do what you tell yourself you should be doing. That's because "shoulds" come from somewhere outside of you. In the long run, you can only be successful if your motivation comes from inside. And while wanting at least places your desire closer to your heart, wanting must also be connected to your "will" in order for you to take action that can make your goal a reality.

Begin to achieve your dream by taking a SMALL step

This is a very important part of achieving goals, because one of the reasons goals often elude us is that getting there can seem so long and complicated. We can get worn out just thinking about all the things we'll need to do, which often means we keep putting off the very things we must do if we are to eventually enjoy our heart's desire. But as the old Chinese proverb says, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step."
Therefore, consider what initial small step you can take that will move you closer to your goal. This is what some people call a "Kaizen" step, part of a gradual series of actions that steadily progress toward your goal. It is important to realize that great deeds and great inventions don't arise suddenly out of the air. They are the consequence of often quite minor steps that, added together, achieve a mighty goal without feeling overwhelmed.
You don't need to know the details of what you will do day after day, week after week. You only need a clear idea of the direction in which you are heading and the first move you can make toward your goal. That step may be as simple as sending off to the government for regulations on what you have to do to incorporate a business. Or it may be to make your lunch tomorrow instead of eating out, and then putting whatever you saved into a jar on your dresser labeled "Europe." It may be to decide that the next time you see your brother, you will ask him about something you know he's interested in.

Reinforce your goal with reminders

Just as some New Year's resolutions fade with the last notes of Old Lang Syne, the pressure of old habits can erode your intention to reach your goal. Fortunately, there are ways you can reinforce the image you hold in your mind.
One form of reinforcement is to draw, buy or clip from magazines several pictures that remind you of your goal. Put these in places where you can't miss them -- in the bathroom, on the refrigerator, on the dashboard of your car, in your wallet. Each time you see them, smile and remember how it felt when you said you will achieve your hearts desire. With each picture you can also include a paper on which is written the question, "What small step can I take today to achieve my goal of . . ." and then write your goal. Each time you notice the question, your subconscious mind will try to answer it, even if your rational, conscious mind isn't sure what to do next.
You can also buy some post-it sticky note pads in your favorite color. Use these to write the steps you will take to move toward your goal and put them with your schedule book or daily to-do list. Having your steps written on special colored paper emphasizes their importance.
Consequently, if being your own boss is what you want to do, the first small reinforcement may be to make an honest assessment of your current abilities, background and expertise in whatever area you're considering. So the first note might simply have the question, "What do I know?" After you've explored what you already know, you may need further information. So the new note could say "library." Then, with some understanding of what is involved, you will need to find out start-up costs and a note with a dollar sign will be your next step on the road to owning a business.
Each time you see them, smile and remember how it felt when you said you will achieve your heart's desire.

It is just not Andres Nocionis style to back down.

The Chicago Bulls took three of the four games in the regular season from the Detroit Pistons, and Nocioni predicted that his team would win the second round series in seven games.

Nocioni said that he wanted to predict a win because he thinks that Chicago has talented players and the team plays a great defense.

While Detroit Pistons Rasheed Wallace said that if the Bulls could go out and do what Nocioni had predicted then it was all credit to them. But he was certain that the series would be a fight for supremacy.

Nocioni is hyperactive and he just cannot wait to meet the Pistons.

It is this energy that makes Nocioni on one hand popular with his teammates and Bulls fans and on the other gets to the opponents. It has led to few heated arguments on the court including the one in 2004-05 with Miamis Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem. In January 2007, Nocioni was suspended for one game for elbowing New Jerseys Mikki Moore.

Luol Deng, Bulls forward, does not think the Nocioni would deliberately hurt anyone because hurting players is not on his mind.

Nocioni gives the Bulls much needed impetus usually in key games.

Bad Credit Second Mortgage by the Numbers

Bad credit second mortgages make up a sizable part of the mortgage market. According to a recent survey by the Mortgage Bankers Association, the number of second mortgage originations increased by 13 percent in the second half of 2005 and closed-end second mortgages increased by 33 percent. The survey included 114 lenders that originated $189 billion in second mortgages, many of them to people with bad credit.

There are at least five numbers that determine the ultimate cost of a bad credit second mortgage: interest rate, years on the job, credit score, closing costs and term length.

Interest rate
The interest rate on a second mortgage is slightly higher than on a first mortgage because it is in a subordinate position. If the borrower defaults and the home goes into foreclosure, the second mortgage is settled after the first, so the lender is taking a greater risk.

The interest rate on a bad credit second mortgage will be higher still, so says Steven Frank, Senior VP at FlexPoint Funding, one of the nations largest subprime mortgage bankers. A bad credit borrower is someone with a FICO score below 62. He or she will pay between 1.5% and 2% higher interest for a second mortgage, but there is no shortage of money or willing lenders in the bad credit mortgage market.

Work history
When considering a bad credit second mortgage, lenders look at the borrowers ability to repay the mortgage. This is verified by checking his or her current employment and total income. Mortgage lenders prefer that the borrower has been employed at the same place for at least two years, or has been in the same line of work for several years.

Credit score
The lender will also look into how the borrower has met previous financial obligations. This is where a credit report and credit score come into play. A credit report lists a persons credit activity for the last several years. It shows the highest balance, current balance and payment history on every account. Negative data such as late or missed payments gets erased after a few years but a bankruptcy can stay in the report for up to ten years.

Credit scores (also known as FICO scores) range from 900 down to 300. A score of 680 or higher signifies good credit. A score between 620 and 680 will cause most mortgage lenders to take a harder look at a borrower. If the number is below 620, as Mr. Franks points out, the person falls in the bad credit range and is charged more for a bad credit second mortgage.

Closing costs
The closing costs associated with a bad credit second mortgage will be cheaper than refinancing a first mortgage. In addition to minor processing fees, some lenders may charge an up-front fee in the form of a percentage of the total loan amount (known as "points). A borrower may also be able to pay points to lower the interest rate on the loan.

Term length
The longer the bad credit second mortgage, the lower the monthly payments but the more interest paid overall. The shorter the second mortgage, the higher the monthly payments but the total costs will be lower. It is in the borrowers best interest to choose the shortest possible term he or she can reasonably afford.

In an attempt to help me relax and forget about the millions of emails that were backing up in my inbox, Randy scheduled me for a one-hour massage while he went to golf school. A nice distraction, but I'm insisting that I am due one of my two allotted email fixes this week. He agrees that tonight is the night I can get online. He wants to start reading the Celestine Prophecy.

We went downtown to see if any of the restaurants had changed their minds and decided to serve lunch to the ignorant tourists who didn't know that summer is the off season in the desert. We parked and took a hike down Palm Canyon Boulevard. I had on high heels and my new Indian embroidered mini dress I got at Walgreen's. I was practically running to keep up with my husband. He was a man on a mission to fill his stomach. After trekking 12 blocks up one side of the street and back down the other, we had only one choice. It was Mexican food...again.

Tuesday was my new son-in-law's birthday but I forgot it again this year. It was on my calendar at home. I was not home. "Out of sight, out of mind," my momma would say. I apologize, Scott. After being part of our family for nearly six years, you would think I could remember your birthday. Especially, since it is the day before my grandmother's birthday and I've been remembering hers all these years. Sheesh! She was hospitalized after I "accidentally" knocked her into the kiddy pool and broke her hair-do. I sent her a get well card. Bitch.

I told you I have been under a lot of stress. I've spent the last six months writing a book that is going to upset a lot of people.

Be unique. Discover the 'unwritten rules' of your business then break them to be different. Dell broke the 'rule' that computers must be sold through dealers. Dell is now a leader in computer direct sales. Stand out from the crowd. Watch for changes in your industry that may threaten your market. If the crowd goes down you don't have to go with it. The leaders in any market do well even in downswings.

Network with leaders in other business to learn about changes - threats and opportunities in their industries. These are people who may or may not actually buy your product - but you gain information, prestige and inspiration from them. You might partner with them for a joint promotion. It builds your credibility to be seen with leaders.

Build your credibility as an expert with the help of the media. Develop your media contacts. You will get the best results from appearing in print. Print has the greatest credibility and you can photocopy it for those who did not see it. Build relationships with editors, writers and reporters in the publications your prospects and clients are most likely to read - or respect. Include these media contacts in your database and treat them like your best clients. Keep them informed of changes in your business. Meet them for lunch or coffee. Offer to introduce them to some of your other contacts they may be interested in meeting.

Write articles about your expertise for the publications. Don't expect to be paid for the articles - you want to get your name out often. The easiest articles to write are tips lists. Editors like them and readers love them - easy to read and use. Once you get published - recycle the articles and offer to other publications. Photocopy the articles and send them to everyone on your database - or at least to your best clients so they receive useful information and see what an expert you are. You must be an expert if your words are in print!

Do you want to excel in your course? Be the best you can be? How much do you want it? Think how great it could feel to be on top of your subject, understanding and enjoying everything you have to learn, acing your tests and assignments. As Sean Connery says in The Untouchables, What are you prepared to do?! Do you go to class wanting to get as much as you can from it, or do you see it as a necessary evil to be endured as part of your course? Do you sit passively waiting for the class to finish or do you treat it as a job, and work hard to do the best you can? Your attitude will be determine to a large extent how well you succeed in your course, more than any other factor. But luckily your attitude is under your control; you can choose how its going to be! So, decide to make the most of it, and you will! And, if thats what you want to do, than heres a few pointers about how to go about making the most of your time in class or lectures:

Treat it like a job. You are there for a reason; to learn as much as you can, and reach your potential in your chosen subject, excel even! Its your job to do a good job!
Be proactive, not passive. Be aware of what you need to learn, and make sure you are learning it. Be conscious of what you understand in class, jot down notes about things you are not clear about and make it your task that day to find out more about them, either by asking questions or doing some further reading. Take responsibility for your own progress, instead of waiting for the teacher to tell you how you are doing.
Look over your material for that day before the class, if you know what its going to be. See how much you can understand by yourself. Notice the things you have difficulty with. Then, when your teacher or lecturer comes to that part of the text, your mind will focus as soon as you hear it, your attention and concentration will be heightened, and you will absorb the new knowledge much faster. You will also have more time to concentrate on the difficult parts, because it wont be all completely new to you.
Revise the material then, within a day and make revision notes.
Learn to ask questions. Learn how to ask questions. Dont be afraid, there are probably more students in your class who need the same clarification. Just make sure they are specific. Instead of I dont understand, for example, specify as closely as you can where you find yourself getting lost. The very act of composing an intelligent question in your mind will help you find the answer yourself seven times out of ten! The lecturer or teacher will always appreciate the fact that you are thinking for yourself and the class will benefit from the interaction and the discussion which may follow.
Pay attention to the obvious things: be punctual; sit in a good seat where you can concentrate, be part of the class and be away from people who are not focussed; keep up with the reading and homework and dont let things slide even if you do, dont give up, get right back into it as soon as you can. Ask for help if you need to get back on track. Your teacher will appreciate your honesty, especially if you come up with a plan to catch up say, an extra chapter a night for a week.

Concentrate on the positives. All walks of life have tedious parts. Dont moan, try and get through boring parts by setting yourself a challenge to finish them in a record time. Remember this very important point: you get back what you put in. If you work at your subject honestly, it will be interesting, if you dont, it will be boring.

What we all need are some decent aerobic exercises. These are what get the heart pumping and muscles working. Not only do You burn calories, but your body is made stronger. With regular aerobic exercises, you also increase your overall energy levels. This is crucial for folks like me who have an extremely hectic schedule every day. It almost goes without saying that we could all use some extra energy. The sad truth is that so many individuals don't realize that energy depends on diet and exercise. There's no getting around it, these are crucial factors.

Do you need or are you looking for some great aerobic exercises? You may want to do some Internet seraches, since the Internet has a huge supply of diet plans, workout programs, and aerobic exercises to choose from. It's as easy as punching in a quick Google search.

Understanding Your Internal Clock

No, we are not talking about your alarm clock that rings two hours too early every morning. Did you even know that you have an internal clock? This can be seen by the difference in people and their sleep habits. Ever noticed that some people regardless of an alarm clock or not wake up 7:00 am on the dot, regardless of what time they went to bed the night before. Others have trouble waking up regardless of the fact that the alarm clock has been screaming for an hour. This is because their internal clock is preset and is different from person to person. So what does this have to do with time management? Understanding when you have the best concentration, feel your best and are the most alert will help you determine the best time to study. Studying is a huge factor and time stealer of college students, so make the most of the session.

If you are an early bird then plan on studying in the morning, at breakfast or shortly there after. If this is your alert time and when you are best able to learn or retain information than make the most of it. On the other hand if you are a night own and are best able to work or understand at dark then study at night. The only concern with studying at night is the fact that you may be tired from a hard days work and have trouble concentrating. How Location Based Services Are Mis-used?

The Global Positions System (GPS) satellites are free for anyone to use. However, to use it, a GPS receiver is required which is not free. In recent years these GPS receivers have become very small and embedded in mobile phones. This has given rise to many location based services. Though there are many LBS applications that are very useful, there are a few applications that are misused.

One of the location-based services as mentioned at http://www.m-indya.com is Child Tracking. In a study carried out by New Media Technologies students (2005) in Australia, they have detailed how this service can be misused. They state that,

In 1998 the US implemented the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act 1998 which limits the ways Web site operators and others may collect and disseminate information pertaining to customers under the age of 13. So far, Australia has not followed suit and does not seem to have a law, which directly protects children from technology such as the Internet. With the introduction of global positioning systems for tracking purposes, the issue of child protection needs to be addressed before this technology gets into the wrong hands and used for malicious purposes.

Some of the other consequences that may occur due to these services are the problem of parent-child relationship and also marital relationship. In their study they point out parents should negotiate with their teenagers an agreeable form of knowing where they are whether it be GPS on their phone or just a phone call to let them know where they are. This will ensure that the relationship will not be damaged through a form of mistrust.

And even between spouses each needs a bit of their own space and privacy, which will be jeopardised by the use of this service and may cause problems in marital relationships.

In a ZDNet news by Lisa Bowman (1999) speaks of some scary scenarios where this technology can be misused such as, Insurance companies could refuse to insure you, or charge you higher rates, unless you install a tracking system on your car. They could then tell if you drive over 55 or spend time in shady neighbourhoods where your car has a greater chance of being stolen. Or FBI and local police officials could have access to your whereabouts by simply logging onto a database attached to a cell phone, tollbooth or GPS tracker.

In yet another case a rental car company was sued by the customer for tracking him down using GPS. In a case that could help set the bar for the amount of privacy drivers of rental cars can expect, a Connecticut man is suing a local rental company, Acme Rent-a-Car, after it used GPS (Global Positioning System) technology to track him and then fined him $450 for speeding three times. A Wireless week (2003) article lists how even location based games can be misused. In Sweden, thousands of wireless game subscribers stalk each other using cell phones and location technology. In Japan, you can use a GPS-enabled cell phone to arrange a date, an application sometimes used by teenage prostitutes. In many countries around the world, a GPS-based game called "geocaching" is growing in popularity. Ever since Princess Dianas death the perils of stalking has come to the forefront in the media. Negative amortization, or "deferred interest," describes loans that have payment adjustment caps in addition to interest rate adjustment caps. Negative amortization loans calculate two interest rates. The first is called the payment rate the second is the actual interest rate. The payment rate is typically capped at 7.5% of the previous payment. The true interest rate is calculated as simply the index plus the margin without periodic caps. When the interest rate resets to a higher rate with a negative amortization Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM), the mortgage payment doesn't change. Instead, the additional interest expense is added to the loan balance.

Borrowers are given a choice of which rate to pay, which is why negative amortization loans are also referred to as "payment option" loans and option ARMs. Cost of Funds Index (COFI), Cost of Savings Index (COSI), and Monthly Treasury Average (MTA or MAT) are all examples of Alt-A negative amortization loans. The Mortgage Bankers Association of America (MBA) says alt-A loans' share rose from 8% to 11%. Why? Negative amortization and interest-only loans can be useful if you are primarily concerned with cash flow instead of building equity. If you only pay the payment rate, the overall monthly mortgage payment might be lower than a typical 30-year, amortization loan. We like people more than we like things. Men like things, the more, the merrier. This is an important difference and we must learn to appreciate it. They love to browse catalogs, the Internet, and stores that sell stuff. It is thrilling for them to go to a computer store, say, and check all the new gadgets put recently on the market. They go to a hardware store and may spend hours lost in paradise.

They get all excited with new toys: cars, electronic gadgets, mechanical devices, etc. These things provide them with opportunities to experiment with some stuff. That is why they start several projects and not necessarily finish them when they get tired. They do things for the sake of trying them out, very much like pure science.

And, even if their enthusiasm is short-lived, it is still something to be cherished. Just like we do with people, when they are done with adoring one thing, they will begin adoring something else. Variety is good.

My friend Tom has a garage filled with stuff that he bought, used perhaps once, and let rest. His enthusiasm is aroused not by the possible uses that his gadgets entail, but by the simple reason that he feels good thinking that one day he might use each for a different project.

I am sure Malaysians all knew Fifi (Noor Hafiza Saharuddin) of TV3s Bersama Mu reality tv show really well. Sweet gorgeous looking lady, isnt she? Some of you may have noticed but most still knew little about this. There is a new hot Internet MLM (Multi Level Marketing) program at the moment that at one glance gave the impression that it is somehow associated with her. The program are being promoted almost everywhere in Malaysian internet from banners, online advertisements, forums, chat rooms, group emails and internet messaging.

The program was initially started by Rafa Green Sdn Bhd (thats equivalent to a Pvt Ltd company) based in Petaling Jaya. The program was a complete unknown then but through the initiatives of their down liners that initiated the idea to establish their online presence through a self managed community based website, they eventually put this program as one of the most talk-about money making opportunity here in Malaysia. The idea is ingenious! Hence, Teamfifi Dot Com was born on June 2006. Now, I have no means to confirm whether or not the website really has anything to do with TV3s personality Fifi. There is no official information published anywhere in Teamfifi Dot Com that can make me draw that conclusion today. One thing for certain though, her images and newspapers clippings featuring her stories are all over in Teamfifi Dot Com.

Their MLM program involves selling health based nutritional products and generating down liners. Their marketing plan is straightforward and effort friendly (basically it means that it is quite easy to achieve). Knowing that each potential MLM marketers have different financial means to start, they have introduced 3 different business start-up plans that are convenient for every target groups. No wonder they are making waves at the moment.

What we are all wondering here at Sahabatul Ventures is their actual objective. Teamfifi Dot Com clearly indicated in their website that they intend to produce at least 5 millionaires; however no targeted time frame is mentioned though. Still, we applaud the objective and hope that they would achieve it one day. However, Sahabatul Ventures do have doubts about their long term objective. Looking from what we can gather from their website, it is obvious that they are going all out for memberships, hunting for down lines to fulfil their marketing plans. This would sound nice in the first few years upon joining them of course but what happens then when you all ready have a lot of members? Going for memberships are one thing but promoting their products is another big factor that they have totally overlooked as of time of writing.

Using a celebrity to indirectly capture the publics attention on their MLM program is clever but this might harm them in the long run. Ask anybody who knew about Teamfifi Dot Com and they would automatically associate it with Fifi the celebrity. Thats not good for business. Are they marketing Fifi as a product or have they all forgotten that what is most important about their MLM program is their health based products that they are supposed to be promoting in the first place? Regardless either which way, the sole party what would laugh all the way to the back is Rafa Green Sdn Bhd. Now, let us take a look at one of direct sellings biggest money makers, Avon. Talk about Avon and everybody knew what Avon is all about. Everybody knew what type of products they have. But did anybody know who is behind Avon or their current CEO who runs the show? No! This is because Avon put every single effort to market their products! Not the other way around like what Teamfifi Dot Com is currently doing.

Overall, Sahabatul Ventures would give Teamfifis Internet MLM program 2 out of possible full 5 stars. Their MLM program marketing plans are excellent and anybody from the street can join them and easily market themselves as up liners since they have a very good free advertising all ready made and done for them directly through Fifis fame and status as a household celebrity as they led everyone to believe via their website. However, they lose a lot of points from their lack of effort in promoting their products which is the mainstay for any MLM programs. Their marketing approach suspiciously looks as if they are in to make easy killings by gunning for an all out membership drives. Do You "Work to Live" or "Live to Work"?

Lets be realistic here - hands up all of you who bounce out of bed every single morning, raring to get to work and enjoying yourself every minute of the day?

If you didnt put your hand up (even metaphorically), youre not alone. There have been so many articles published recently about working statistics in the UK - that Brits work the longest hours in the EU, that we have higher risks of heart disease than our continental friends due to stress and poor diet, there has been a rise in people "downshifting" and moving to the country to raise chickens and weave baskets. But many people who dream of doing just that dont, especially when there are so many television programs on, which show all the grisly details about how people who do downshift simply exchange one set of problems for another. While there are many people who make a real success of changing their careers in such a dramatic fashion, it might be worthwhile sorting out what problems you do have with your current career before making that radical decision to downshift.

First Things First

The first place to start is to think about why you chose to do what you do - what was it about Law that attracted you originally? Was it the logic that attracted you? Or the feeling of winning? Or the love of solving problems? Or was it the safe thing to do? Were your parents lawyers and pushed you in that direction? Was it for the money? Even if the last few questions ring true for you, you can still enjoy your work.

What do you actually do?

Think about all the aspects of your job: what do you actually do during the day? Speak to people on the phone? Do research? Prepare reports? Present at meetings? If you do more than two of the above on a daily basis, youre not so different to many office workers.

So think about what part of the day you look forward to - apart from going-home time. Do you enjoy the challenge of presenting, or love learning new facts, or talking and interacting with other people? Try thinking about your day in terms of the actual things you do and what you can get out of each different task. Could you delegate or reassign the tasks you dont like doing and shift the majority of your workload towards the things you prefer? Or can you think about it all in a different way? How much of your day is spent doing the things you actually like? If it is less that 50%, will you settle for that? Try doing a rated pro/con list of everything you do, with each item being scored on a 1-5 scale, where 1 means you love it and 5 means you cant stand it. If you have lots of 1s on your pro list and lots of 3s on your con list, thats good, but if it is the other way around, and your pro items are all scored at 3 and your con list is all at 5, you may want to think about re-evaluating your career.

People Problems

Treat people are THEY wish to be treated

What if the people that surround you are what makes you dread walking through the door in the morning? Do you have an annoying boss, colleague or client? If you heart sinks when a certain person opens their mouth - for whatever reason (condescension, cattiness or plain stupidity), try thinking about what exactly it is that is rubbing you the wrong way. Youre you - deserving of respect and care. But doesnt that go the other way too? Theres that old saying "treat others as you wish to be treated", but surely everyone is different? Shouldnt that really be altered to say "treat everyone as THEY wish to be treated"? This requires you to actually attempt to understand other people - and while it takes that bit more effort, it can help you reduce unnecessary friction and make the people who surround you daily into more than just people who work in the same location.

Change Yourself, not Others

No doubt youve heard it before - you cant change someone else. What you can do is change your attitude and behaviour towards them. If youre being defensive around one person always, try thinking about why that is - is there some niggle in your mind saying that this person is not on the same level as you. Are you jealous of the way they are and the way they live? If they are junior to you in experience and position, but are the darling of the boss, is their progress something that you wish had happened to you? What would happen if you started treating them as an equal?

Respond with Care

What about if you are being treated unfairly? If you are reacting to this with a very hostile manner, you are really tying yourself into a viscious circle where it will be impossible to escape with your self-esteem, dignity and reputation intact. I dont mean to say take it on the chin, but you can do a lot about situations like these without actually bringing yourself down to a level where relations are irreparably damaged. For instance, you dont need to show your boss that your colleague is being badly behaved by using the style of a schoolgirl tattling to her teacher. Try speaking to the person who is upsetting you and explaining why their behaviour is so hurtful, and suggesting an alternate way of interacting. Often, people really just dont realise that what they are doing is offensive or mean, and may actually think that it is a lighthearted joke. And if you are able to present this to them in a way that does not resemble a personal attack, you may be able to rescue the situation without any problems at all. Obviously there are times where this wont work, and this may require you to evaluate the values of those around you - and if they dont match yours, you will need to think your options through in rather more detail.

Case Study 1 - Work-Life Balance

One client of mine recently posed the problem that there was no chance of her ever enjoying her job, and refused to consider looking for a new one. I was quite shocked by this statement - as she was basically refusing to do anything about her problem, but I couldnt resist the challenge. So I set her the task of removing two bad things from other areas of her life (not her work), and replacing them with two good things every week and introducing a weekly reward into her life for all the bad things she still had to do. Initially she started by replacing an unhealthy breakfast with a healthy one, and secondly she replaced vegging out mindlessly in front of the telly every evening with going out for dinner regularly. As her treat in the first week she went and had a massage and facial on Saturday.

Each week she repeated this process, with things like gettting a new chair for her home office so she could sit correctly while surfing the internet, and going and doing the exercise she really enjoyed (squash) rather than going to the gym. One day, she told me that she was actually enjoying getting up every morning as she had something to look forward to every evening after work. She no longer slept late at the weekend and did nothing of note for two whole days, but got out and did things that shed been missing, like going to galleries and the theatre. She was in a highly paid job so all she was doing before was watching her bank balance rise and rise, work harder and harder and never see any benefit from working herself into the ground. Most importantly, she started rediscovering her love for her work as she now had the energy to tackle her highly demanding job.

Case study 2 - Control Issues

Another client of mine was constantly rushing from one drama to another and loved her job in theory, but hated it in practice, and realised that her lack of time was affecting her life outside her work as well as her health. We implemented a prioritising plan and she committed herself to learning a relaxation technique, but also we tackled the cause of her stress: her belief that each and every task had to be done immediately and by her alone. By learning how to delegate and prioritise - as well as understanding where her need for control came from - she was able to alleviate and ultimately remove the cause of her stress - and ultimately become happier and more fulfilled, and, most importantly more productive: shes just closed a deal which she truly thought she would have no chance on thanks to the sheer volume of work that needed doing in preparation. Her assistant now handles most of that, and appreciates the extra responsibility along with the pay raise!

It is all too important that when dealing with stress you attack it on both sides - the symptoms and the cause. If you only treat the symptoms you will keep having to treat them. By removing the cause, you remove the need to constantly treat the symptoms as well.

Stay or Go - fix your problems first either way

If you are truly not enjoying your job, it is important to find out why. If it is due to something that is relatively simple to fix, there is no need to go through the hassle of upheaving your whole life. However, there are many cases where the career youre in is just not suited to you. Do you really want to be spending a third of your life (or more) doing what youre doing? If you dont, youre not alone. Recent reports show that the average number of careers a person has in their working lifetime is 3 - and that figure is increasing. If you are truly bored by your job, gather up your resources and change! Remember though, that you may be taking the same problems with you, so it might be worth working them out now and getting them fixed before you make the move.

Digital TV replaces analog TV in the next few years

By 2012 most countries in the world will have made the full transition to digital TV services and switched off their analog TV broadcasts. Different countries on different timescales will phase in the switch off but for most of us the deadline is rapidly approaching and could get to you sooner than you think. So what does it mean to you?

The Digital TV transition can't be ignored

Color TV revolutionised TV when it was introduced to the world in the 1960s but it had little immediate impact on our lives when it happened. The analog color TV standards were designed to be compatible with existing monochrome signals so nobody had to change their TV equipment unless they wanted to take advantage of the new color TV broadcasts.

This time things are different. If you are happy today with your analog TV equipment and you want to continue watching TV broadcasts then you will have to buy new gear. Digital TV is not compatible with analog TV and no attempt has been made to make it so.

You will need some way of receiving digital TV broadcasts

Your options will be digital satellite TV, digital cable TV or digital terrestrial TV. The most popular choice is likely to be terrestrial reception, which is the way most of us have watched TV for decades. Either way you will need new equipment to receive the digital signals. You might need to upgrade and reposition your terrestrial TV aerial and many people could find that they just can't get a good enough signal from their terrestrial aerial for digital TV to work.

Terrestrial coverage is not 100% by any means and cable is rarely available except in densely populated areas, which means that satellite TV could be your only option.

No more watching one program while recording another

With analog TV there is a tuner in all your TV sets and in your VCR, which enables you to watch more than one channel at a time and even record one channel and watch another. To do the same thing with digital TV you will need apparatus with more than one digital tuner which means you will likely need to change your VCR for a digital type as well.

There are some excellent subscription services like Sky+ in the UK that provide you with a set-top box equipped with 2 tuners and a hard drive to allow you to record one channel while watching another or even to record 2 channels while watching another recording.

The bottom line is that watching more than one channel at a time will now only come at a cost. You will at least need to buy new equipment and you might have to pay for a subscription also.

The benefits of digital TV

Digital TV will mean better quality pictures and more channels to watch because it requires less bandwidth than the old analog service. When the analog signals are switched off and digital services claim the bandwidth that it releases you will see even more services being offered.

It's all at a price but that's progress I guess.

One of the greatest advantages of laminate flooring is the sheer selection of different patterns you can have on it. While real wood flooring comes in one look that is, wood laminate can have almost anything on it. What Are Food Allergies, Intolerances And Sensitivities?

Food allergies are due to IgE antibodies made for specific foods that an individual has for some reason developed because their body has misinterpreted the food(s) as a foreign invading protein. The presence of IgE antibody to the specific food a person is allergic to results in an immediate immune reaction of the body to the food when it is eaten. The IgE antibody binds its specific food protein and initiates reactions in the body that include the release of chemicals such as histamine that may result in symptoms of itching, swelling, wheezing or difficulty breathing, rash or hives, and if severe, shock resulting in death if not reversed. Vomiting and diarrhea may occur but are less common.

Testing for the presence of allergy to a food or foods can be done by blood test or skin testing or both. One of the most common blood tests is the RAST test that looks for the presence of the specific IgE antibodies to common food allergens and other foods based on a history suggesting that a particular food is suspect. Skin testing is done by injecting or applying extracts of the common and any suspect food(s) to pricked or scratched skin and looking for diagnostic hive like reactions at the site of the suspect food. The most common food allergens are peanut, cows milk, wheat, corn, soy, shellfish, eggs, tree nuts, chocolate, pork, tomato, and citrus.

The terms food intolerance and sensitivity are commonly used interchangeably. They refer to a group of food reactions that occur that are not IgE antibody caused. In more general terms they refer to any adverse or unpleasant reaction that occurs after a food is eaten.

Food reactions that are not allergic in cause may have a variety of causes. A particular food may not be tolerated because it is not digested adequately due to an enzyme deficiency. Lactase, the enzyme that digests milk sugar or lactose, is present on the surface of the intestine lining cells. Lactase deficiency can be inherited or acquired. It commonly occurs whenever the intestine lining is damaged. Because the lactase enzymes are on the outer most surface of the intestine they are more vulnerable to injury. For example, after intestinal flu or in untreated Celiac disease, lactose intolerance is common. Other sugar enzymes can be deficient or the intestine can be simply overwhelmed by too large a sugar load at one time. A classic example is the Big Gulp syndrome when someone drinks a giant cola beverage then experiences the gut ache from the tremendous amount of fructose. Large amounts cannot be handled by the intestine and that results in bloating, urgency and terrible diarrhea.

Deficiency of digestive enzymes released into the intestine can result in poor digestion of foods. For example, when the pancreas gland is damaged (pancreatitis) chronically, usually from chronic alcohol abuse, or is congenitally underdeveloped or malfunctioning (e.g. cystic fibrosis). The pancreatic enzyme deficiency that occurs results in malabsorption, especially for fats, that cause symptoms of diarrhea and weight loss. Abnormal bacteria types and levels in the gut, also known as dysbiosis, and abnormal excess levels of bad bacteria or presence of bacteria in upper small intestine where little or no bacteria normally occur (bacterial overgrowth) can interfere with digestion, absorption or cause fermentation of food resulting in symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea.

Some foods and food additives have a direct toxic effect on the gastrointestinal tract. Additives such as MSG and sulfites can cause symptoms, including flushing and diarrhea or the Chinese restaurant or salad bar syndromes.

All foods contain proteins known as lectins. Some of these proteins are highly resistant to digestion and are toxic to the human intestine especially if they are not pre-treated by soaking, cooking well, or removing toxic portions. For example, inadequately soaked and cooked kidney beans will cause a food poisoning like illness. There are several foods that have lectins that are poorly tolerated by many humans and are lethal to insects and pests. One researcher, Loren Cordain PhD., author of the Paleo Diet, has published extensive research on how the human intestine is not evolved to tolerate many of the foods we now eat but did not eat in the ancient hunter-gatherer times resulting in many of the illness seen in modern societies and the rising epidemic of autoimmune diseases. Several of the modern foods that were not part of the ancient diet but constitute much our diet now have well recognized toxic or poorly tolerated proteins known as lectins. Examples include wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), casein (cows milk protein), peanut agglutinin (PNA), soyabean agglutinin (SBA) and tomato lectin (TL) that have been shown in animal studies to be toxic to the human gut. There are a few published studies and little active research on the role of dietary lectins in health and disease.

When the reaction is an immune toxicity reaction to a food protein intestinal damage commonly results, frequently referred to as leaky gut because of the symptoms of malabsorption or the entry of toxic food proteins and/or bacterial products into the blood stream resulting in a variety of adverse health effects. This reaction may result in autoimmunity, the body attacking itself within the gut or distant organs or tissues. The reaction may be aided by abnormal bacteria types and/or levels in the gut (dysbiosis). The symptoms commonly develop over time and flare in just hours to up to three days after eating the offending food and continue as the food is eaten.

Because the protein in the food is usually the cause and such proteins may be hidden in other foods, especially processed foods, and the toxicity is more of a delayed and cumulative immune reaction, it is very difficult for the person suffering from this to identify the specific food as the cause. For example gluten (the protein in wheat) and casein (the protein in cows milk) are in many foods and toxic to many individuals. Over time people sensitive to such food proteins typically become more ill and may develop enough intestinal injury that blood tests for other types of antibodies, IgG and/or IgA, to the food or specific food proteins, may be detectable in the blood, stool or saliva.

Delayed immune response to proteins in the food (wheat, cows milk) resulting in bowel injury, gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal symptoms and increased autoimmune conditions is most well recognized in Celiac disease. It is an autoimmune disease resulting from ingestion of gluten in wheat or products made from wheat flour (or gluten like proteins in barley and rye). It used to be considered a disease of children and rare, especially in the United States. However, blood test screening studies have documented that it is present in approximately 1 in 133 to 1 in100 people worldwide though most of those affected are undiagnosed and untreated. It is diagnosed by positive screening blood tests and confirmed by a characteristic abnormal small intestine on biopsy followed by relief of symptoms and return of the intestine to normal after a gluten-free diet. Untreated it is associated with higher rates of cancer especially lymphoma, osteoporosis, anemia, and other complications of malabsorption resulting in shortened life expectancy. It is treated with a life-long gluten free-diet. Lesser degrees of gluten intolerance or sensitivity may not be severe enough to cause abnormal or diagnostic blood tests and intestinal biopsies but result in symptoms that improve or resolve with a gluten-free diet and may be detected by elevated stool or saliva antibody tests.

Though injury to the intestine tissue may be seen visually as abnormal appearing tissue during endoscopic procedures such findings are non-specific for the cause. The tissue frequently appears normal and therefore many times is not sampled by biopsy, though under the microscope injury may be seen, though not specific for cause or food. If the physician is either not suspecting food intolerance or doesnt routinely biopsy normal appearing intestinal tissue looking for signs of food intolerance, the injury may not be discovered.

The immune based food intolerances are commonly associated with many symptoms that can be both gastrointestinal and outside the gut and may include bloating, gas, diarrhea (and sometimes constipation), abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, headaches, joint and muscle pains, skin rashes, weight loss or gain, anemia or nutritional deficiencies, irritability, depression, mental fogginess, and nerve pain (neuropathy). These symptoms may be misdiagnosed or mislabeled as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, reflux, ulcer, and fibromyalgia, etc. without another thought by patient or physician that food intolerance may be the cause and specific food elimination may be the cure. The common food allergens also are the most common causes of food intolerance reactions.

Generally, most physician are aware of common food allergy symptoms and how and when to test. However, several studies have confirmed most peoples experience that the majority of primary care physicians are unaware of the common symptoms of Celiac disease, that blood tests exist for screening antibodies and the high risk genes, and that it is common and may be diagnosed in adults. This is why the diagnosis is delayed on average over 11 years in most adults, after many of them have irreversible complications such as osteoporosis, cancer, or another autoimmune disease. The awareness and acceptance of non-Celiac gluten sensitivity and other food protein intolerances in the medical community is even worse.

Therefore, food intolerance or sensitivity is commonly missed and untreated. Many patients are forced to self-diagnose by discovery of the link of their symptoms to specific foods serendipitously, often as a result of an elimination diet, recommendation of an alternative practitioner or friend/relative, or search for help on the internet or multiple physicians for help. Since we're talking about high speed internet service, we should probably start with, you guessed it, speed! Verizon's main internet service is DSL. DSL uses your home's existing telephone lines to deliver internet service at speeds significantly higher than dial up. You'll find a couple bucks difference between cable and FiOS depending on where you live. Both have combined service deals that offer internet, tv and phone service (yes, Verizon FiOS delivers TV service in some ares) all on one bill for about $100 per month.

Our last topic is currently a major deciding factor for most- availability. Comcast provides service in tons of cities across the country. If you have Comcast cable tv service, you're already wired for Comcast high speed internet. FiOS, on the other hand is only available in a handful of areas at the moment. Verizon is gradually installing the fiber optic lines needed for the service one neighborhood at a time, and have currently only served a small portion of their national footprint. In short, there aren't many people that can actually get FiOS just yet. Verizon is expanding service all the time, but they have a long way to go.

So there you have it. Verizon has slightly higher speeds at prices comparable to Comcast, but Comcast is available in more locations. If you're upgrading from DSL, FiOS is probably a good choice if it's available in your area. If you're already a Comcast customer, I doubt you'd notice much difference after going through the hassle of switching, the difference in speed just isn't that significant.

Disclosure Debate Reheats In Wake Of FTC Report

In the wake of the mammoth study of mortgage disclosures released in mid-June by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the real estate industry is actively analyzing the new forms and the FTC's conclusions about what needs changing. But the opinions on the study and what it could mean for RESPA reform are unsurprisingly varied. Paul Schieber of Blank Rome LLP perhaps said it best when he observed, "To be honest, any new form is probably going to be an improvement, but no form will satisfy everyone."

Brokers pleased

Marc Savitt, vice president and president-elect of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB), was very pleased with the FTCs findings.

I cant tell you how happy I am to see this report the way it came out, because it validates everything NAMB has been saying for the past few years we need to simplify these disclosures to make them easier for consumers to understand. Whoever originates a loan should disclose on the exact same forms in the exact same manner. As the report shows, the way it is done now confuses the consumer, and when it confuses the consumer, they make mistakes, and they are costly mistakes.

Savitt noted, One of the most surprising things from this is that youd think more disclosure would come out as a result of this report or that theyd be recommending more disclosure not just clearer disclosure. But actually what theyre saying is that there is too much disclosure.

He added that even the savviest consumers are often confused by the forms, saying, Ive had people that are lawyers and/or involved in the mortgage business [applying for loans] and you can see in their eyes that they dont understand [the forms]. We always tell them that if you dont understand, dont be afraid to ask what you may think is a stupid question, because the only stupid question is the one you dont ask.

Breaking down the findings

Howard Lax of Lipson Neilson Cole Seltzer Garin PC took a very analytical look at the report.

I cannot fault the empirical findings of the study, he said. However, there is still a lot more work to be done before new disclosure models are proposed. This is clearly evident from the conclusions of the study.

Lax went through each conclusion one-by-one, offering comments on each.

(1) Current mortgage cost disclosures failed to convey key mortgage costs to many consumers.

We know this already, Lax said.

(2) Prototype disclosures developed for the study significantly improved consumer recognition of mortgage costs, demonstrating that better disclosures are feasible.

Yes, but they are up against a very low standard, Lax said. The issue is not whether better disclosures are feasible - that is a given. The issue is whether better disclosures will be effective. This is just a first stab at providing effective disclosures. More work needs to be done.

Lax emphasized that "significant improvement is needed in the next prototype disclosure about prepayment and balloon loans, and explaining how the APR differs from the interest rate (and why this is important).

Lax also pointed out the following quote from page ES-9 of the study:

Although the prototype form provided significant improvements in consumer understanding, some consumers still failed to recognize key costs, and, in some cases, represented substantial proportions of prototype form respondents. Forty-one percent of prototype form respondents, for example, could not identify the amount of prepayment penalties (though this was a substantial improvement over the 95 percent who could not do so with the current forms), and 30 percent did not recognize that the loan included a large balloon payment, an identical percentage as in the current forms group. Further development of the disclosures may provide additional improvements that better convey these costs.

Regarding this, Lax said, It is significant that borrowers who thought they were happy with their loan were not, and borrowers who thought they understood the terms of their loan did not even those who considered themselves sophisticated consumers. Further study may reveal that there is no good way to explain certain terms, such as what the APR is and the benefit this disclosure provides. If it is not possible to make this disclosure effective (especially since almost all homeowners prepay their loan), the Federal Reserve Board and Congress should think about abandoning this disclosure or significantly revising it in favor of a more effective yardstick (perhaps by showing the cost of credit over the first seven years of a loan rather than over the life of the loan).

(3) Both prime and subprime borrowers failed to understand key loan terms, and both benefited from the improved disclosures.

Was anyone able to identify how they could have benefited from the improved understanding? Lax asked. Were there any Gee, I could have had a V-8! moments? Did anyone go back to their lender and demand a modification of their loan?

(4) Improved disclosures provided the greatest benefit for more complex loans, where both prime and subprime borrowers had the most difficulty understanding loan terms.

I would like to see the FTC repeat the study with people who never had a mortgage loan, across a broader range of the population, Lax said. The study produced minor differences between the understanding of loan terms by prime and subprime borrowers. We hear anecdotal stories of loan officers taking advantage of subprime borrowers because they are uneducated or inexperienced. Perhaps subprime borrowers are educated by the origination process so that the study results are similar for prime and subprime borrowers. Perhaps the anecdotal stories were not supported by the study because the sample population for the study was from Montgomery County, Md., an area where education and income levels are substantially higher than elsewhere in the U.S., he noted.

Testing individuals who fall into the prime and subprime credit categories in various financially homogeneous regions (e.g. the City of Detroit, the City of San Francisco, and two rural communities) but who have not purchased a home may show that there are greater differences in understanding disclosures among persons of different financial circumstances. This issue was not part of this study, Lax said.

He added, I suspect that creditworthiness is strongly related to the level of parental training and other informal education concerning financial services received by teenagers and young adults. Disclosures need to be developed for the inexperienced (first time) home buyer. Perhaps we need an additional set of disclosures for the experienced consumer.

Regarding this point, James Lacko of the FTC's Bureau of Economics and author of the study, disagreed about the study's scope.

Lacko told RESPAnews, Although [Lax] is correct that we did not focus the study on first-time homebuyers, we did examine mortgage customers in many areas of the country, Lacko said. The Montgomery County, Md. sample was used for the 36 in-depth interviews conducted in the study. The study also conducted consumer testing with over 800 mortgage customers in 12 locations across the country, including Boston, Westchester County (New York), Akron, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Portland and Seattle.

Making it mean something

Lax also had some observations about other portions of the study.

He pointed out pages 31-34 of the report (Section 3.4.2) which explain how the study found that applicants really do not understand the various services that a broker or lender performs that are listed on the GFE.

These statements underscore the need for mandatory financial education in public schools, Lax said.

Further, Lax said, Page 61 of the report states that the enhanced GFE disclosure used in the study provided a total closing cost estimate rather than an itemized cost list. Many brokers and lenders have been providing a total of the estimated closing costs for a long time without any apparent benefit to consumers. This is evident from the high number of subjects that failed to identify the cash due at closing when the closing costs are financed (pages 99-100 of the report). Anecdotal stories indicate that the average uninformed consumer only cares how much his or her payment is going to be. Hence, there are only two significant items of information. First, how much money do I need to bring to closing (the report correctly identifies this as the borrower's first payment), and how much is my monthly payment thereafter.

If the total closing costs is going to be a prime disclosure on the GFE, it has to mean something, he continued. I believe that consumers are confusing the total closing costs and the amount needed to close. Both are important, but they are different concepts and they should be disclosed in different manners to recognize the differences. The total loan closing costs should be identified as a hidden cost of credit much like taxes and title fees when buying a car that may be built into the amount that is financed to buy the car. The amount that needs to be brought to closing should be identified as the first loan payment, as alluded to in the report.

A second disclosure?

Lax further said that the disclosure did not address some of the more complex decisions that a borrower should consider in structuring the loan.

I think that the FTC should consider adding a second disclosure as an addendum that addresses subtle issues beyond the what is my payment level, he said. For example, the concept that the consumer can lower his closing costs and monthly payment by paying the closing costs rather than financing them should be disclosed in terms of the borrower's loan perhaps in a short table attached as an addendum at the end of the disclosure.

The HUD factor

After the study came out last week, HUDs Brian Sullivan said the department was looking at the report and prototype disclosure and felt that the agencies were both singing the same general song here, and that is better disclosure is better.

Sullivan said HUD certainly will be considering the FTCs suggestions as it moves forward with drafting the new rule and noted that HUD has continuously been in contact with its federal partners throughout the whole reform process.

For his part, Savitt said he hopes HUD limits itself to RESPA reform lite as Phil Schulman of K&L Gates put it in 2005, commenting on a reform proposal that would include only a revamped GFE.

Savitt added, We hope HUD implements these changes and takes the recommendations seriously. It would be a tremendous benefit to the industry and consumers.

RESPA reform and policy implications

With regard to HUDs RESPA reform effort, Rich Andreano Jr. of Weiner Brodsky Sidman Kider PC felt that the FTCs finding that consumer comprehension of mortgage transactions can be materially enhanced by simply improving the loan disclosures is significant.

Andreano noted, While the FTC prototype disclosure presents a lump sum amount for settlement charges as a package, the FTC makes clear that it is not proposing the packaging concept that HUD included in its 2002 reform effort. Specifically, the FTC states that although the prototype form uses the phrase package when referring to the settlement services charge, it would not necessarily require the types of packages outlined by HUD in its 2002 proposal. All that is necessary is that the cost of the various settlement services be disclosed as a single price rather than itemized as in the current GFE. Whether this is accomplished through a HUD-type package or simply an aggregation of the individual costs is not material to the disclosure or its intended use by consumers. It will be interesting to see if HUD hears the FTC and proposes only improvements in the GFE and related changes, or attempts to adopt more wide-sweeping changes to RESPA as it did in 2002.

HUD may be successful if it takes the former approach, and it likely will not be successful if it takes the latter approach, Andreano said.

Giving teeth to the GFE

Lax went a bit further in his policy speculation, stating that there is another issue Congress needs to address.

State regulators recently began criticizing brokers for providing a GFE that varies significantly from the figures on the final HUD Settlement Statement. In many cases, the variance is due to differences between the processing fees, lender paid broker fees, and origination fees for (a) the loan amount and loan program used to provide the GFE, and (b) the loan program offered to the borrower after underwriting the borrower's credit, he said.

In Michigan, state examiners have been recommending that brokers and lenders redisclose the GFE three days before closing to correct the estimates made at the time of application, Lax continued. There is no basis in state or federal law to require the redisclosure of the GFE. Some brokers, to avoid a charge by state regulators that the GFE is not accurate, are providing ranges of fees (e.g. the dollar equivalent of 0 percent to 5 percent of the loan amount) rather than fixed amounts. If only a total range of fees is provided, the consumer will not be able to use this disclosure for its intended purposes to shop for credit.

Either we must drop the pretense that consumers can use the GFE to shop for credit, or we need to make this disclosure binding on the broker for a period of time to permit the borrower to shop it around, he concluded.

Lung Cancer in Non-Smokers

More and more often, I come across cases of nonsmokers who develop lung cancer. My attention is always drawn to news of this nature because my husband passed away at the age of 51 from brain and lung cancer. He never smoked a day in his life.

The complacency non-smokers have shared over the years is no longer a viable option. Smokers and non-smokers alike are vulnerable to a disease which is largely incurable. Among patients with lung cancer, only about 14% live five years after their diagnosis.

In the face of a disease that seems to have neither rhyme nor reason, what can we do to protect ourselves? First, assess your risk for lung cancer; then take measures to prevent the disease.

What are the risk factors for lung cancer?

Gender: Unfortunately, women seem to be more vulnerable to lung cancer. Research has shown that female smokers are more susceptible to the cancer-causing chemicals found in cigarettes. In another study, a gene linked to abnormal lung cancer cell growth was found to be more active in women than in men. It did not matter whether the women smoked or not.

A family history of lung cancer: Evidence suggests that there is a lung cancer gene which predisposes offspring to develop lung cancer. However, the evidence is far from conclusive as the situation is made difficult by the fact that offspring of smokers have been exposed to a smoking environment since childhood and would therefore have a greater risk for developing the disease.

Scarring from previous lung disease: Scarring in lungs caused by tuberculosis or other lung disease can be a risk factor for lung cancer.

Second-hand smoke: Exposure to second-hand smoke has been shown to be a definite risk factor. Your risk increases by 30 percent from daily exposure to second-hand smoke. This is probably the most significant risk factor for lung cancer in non-smokers.

Exposure to radon: Radon is an odorless gas than can seep out of the soil into buildings. Worse yet, the gas can seep from the soil into water near residential communities. Radon has been implicated as a potential cause of lung cancer.

Air pollution: Long-term occupational exposure to diesel exhaust fumes may increase lung cancer risk by 47%. Air pollution in general is a risk factor in the general population. Swedish researchers estimate that as many as 1 in 10 cases of lung cancer may be caused by air pollution in the Swedish capital city, Stockholm.

Past Cancer Treatment: Researchers in Sweden who looked at the medical records of 140,000 breast cancer patients found that there was an increase of lung cancer 5 to 20 years after breast cancer treatment. Suspicion is that radiotherapy in the chest area may have made the lungs more susceptible to the disease.

Estrogen Replacement Therapy: According to researchers at the University of Pittsburg, estrogen may fuel the growth of non small-cell lung cancer.

What preventative measures can we take?

Diet: An apple a day may keep lung cancer away. A Finnish study suggests that apples not only keep doctors away, but provide protection for the lungs as well. This study found that people who ate the most apples were 58 % less likely to develop lung cancer. Other studies suggest that lung cancer risk is lower among smokers and non smokers who ate at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruits daily.

Beta Carotene: A high intake of beta carotene compounds can lower your lung cancer risk; however, studies also show that the beta carotene is only effective when the compounds are ingested from whole foods such as peaches, melon, carrots, mangoes, dark leafy vegetables, squash etc. The opposite effect seems to take place with beta carotene supplements. A Finnish study reported 18% more lung cancer cases among heavy smokers who took beta carotene supplements. And a National Cancer Study on the effects of vitamin A and beta carotene was halted because smokers taking the supplements had 28% more lung cancer than those taking a placebo.

Selenium and Vitamin C: Taking selenium supplements on a long-term basis has been shown to decrease the incidence of lung cancer. In one study, people taking 55-200 mcg of the mineral daily had a 46% lower rate of lung cancer. As well, studies indicate that people who take less than 90 mg of vitamin C on a daily basis may have a 90% higher risk of lung cancer than those who take 140mg or more.

Avoid second-hand smoke and check your house for radon.

There are never guarantees in life, but it makes perfectly good sense to take some preventative measures as these can not only improve your overall quality of health and life but also prevent lung cancer.
