Smart Cards and Access Control - A Look Into the Not Too Distant Future

Highly popular in Europe and Asia, smart cards are making a strong impact in America.

Originally requiring contact with the reader in order to transfer information, manufacturers have begun building proximity, non-contact type cards that transfer bi-directional data utilizing RFID technology.

By encoding the cards and the readers with 64-bit encrypted "keys", manufacturers are able to provide highly secure credentials for access and simultaneously open up a whole new world of possible applications for proximity cards.

The data chips on smart cards can be segregated into separate application areas. Some manufactures provide as many as 16-different application areas. Each application area can be provided with its own unique 64-bit "key" so that only specific readers can access the information in that area.

In other words, you can have a reader in the library that has the 64-bit key to application area # 4 where the card stores all of your library information including which books you have checked out and not returned. A reader in the cafeteria has the 64-bit key to application area # 6 which debits money from your account for food purchases. The reader on the student housing building has the 64-bit key to application area # 1 where your card access level information is stored which grants you access into the dormitory.

With the advances in smart card technology, manufacturers are working on stand alone readers and locksets that are essentially "off-line" but they will still be able to integrate with P.C. based electronic access control systems.

The stand alone smart locks will incorporate smart card readers with the ability to write the transaction back to the smart card. A person could visit hundreds of the "off-line" readers and when he reads his card at an "on-line" reader, the stored transactions would be downloaded to the database. If a person is fired, or taken out of the database for any reason, the "on-line" system can write the necessary information deleting the card, to each card that it reads. In this way, the information is transferred to the "off-line" readers telling them to delete the access privileges of the card.

Theoretically, this will allow large users of access control systems to customize their solutions and provide a mix of on-line and off-line readers that can be centrally managed while taking advantage of their existing communication infrastructure.

Another popular feature of smart cards is the ability to store biometric access control templates which allows faster response from biometric authentication readers. This innovative approach to biometric technology allows you to carry around your biometric template with you, rather than having it stored on the computer or the reader itself.

Because the template comparison becomes a one to one versus a one to many, it frees up valuable processor time and hard drive storage space, which allows the new bread of biometric readers to work very quickly.

Very soon, when you use your credit card at a point of sale, you might have to present your finger to a biometric reader to verify your identity. Not long after that, even internet transactions will be authenticated using some form of smart cards and biometric identification.

If you know youre in His will, you can confidently face every storm knowing that God is yet faithful. Things are going to work out. You may have gotten off to a rough start, but surely, youre about to see the manifestation of Gods goodness.

I dont want you to passively read this today. Rather, make it personal. Internalize what Im saying. Recognize that its not by chance that youre reading this blog. This is not just coincidence. On the contrary, this message has been tailor-made for you.

3 Ways to Get a Lower Interest Rate

As interest rates begin to creep forward, many people will not buy that next home or investment property because they can no longer afford the loan. Below are three methods that are quite common and can get a borrower a lower interest rate than the brand-new 30 year fixed mortgage loan. Of course, many negative side effects can crawl out of the wood work with these methods, so one should prepare themselves and be careful.

1.) ARMs - ARMs are adjustable rate mortgages, meaning that the interest rate on the loan periodically adjusts, usually every six or twelve months. Initially, these types of loans will get one a lower interest rate than the compared 30 year fixed mortgage, but be very careful. Detail will not be delved into, but be careful because if interest rates are rising and most likely will be in the future, the interest rate on the ARM will surely rise every time it is evaluated; thus making the monthly payments in the long run considerably higher than those of the compared 30 year fixed mortgage.

2.) Loan Assumptions - One can sometimes assume an ARM loan form the home seller, thus giving them the interest rate of the older loan. This is a crafty way to get an ARM that has a lower interest rate than the new ARM loans being offered. Of course, 30 year fixed loans are rarely assumable, so with assuming an ARM loan, the dangers mentioned above in method one may also apply to this method.

3.) Seller Financing - Some home owners actually own their home. Often, these people will offer attractive financing with lower-than-average interest rates. Seller financed property may initially cost more than comparable property. But, with the lower-than-average interest rate, the buyer can easily afford to pay more for the property because the low interest rate balances the cost out.

In addition to the above three loan types, there are additional methods that can be used to get lower interest rates, such as, raising the points on the loan, excellent credit, or a large down payment.

Your Children And The Internet - 5 Tips To Keep Your Children Safe While They Are Online

If your children are on the Internet you may be concerned about their safety. We hear stories regularly about unscrupulous adults luring young people into dangerous situations. Our kids want to be connected and we should encourage that desire, but it is important to set strict guidelines for how that is to be done. Here are 5 tips to keep your children safe while they are using the Internet at your home.

  • Place your family computer in the center of the house. Make sure that the monitor is against the wall and the chair is facing inward, not the other way around. You want it so that anyone in the vicinity of the computer can easily see what is on the screen. That will discourage you child from visiting sites they should not be viewing or writing things they would rather not have read. Make this computer area a highly trafficked one that offers little privacy.
  • Teach your children that privacy is not part of using the computer. Encourage them to share what they are writing or seeing with other family members. Get everyone involved so that computer time becomes social, family time where they are doing this activity as though it were any other family activity.
  • Have passwords that are used by the entire family. If you have one computer that is connected to the Internet for all of your children to use then they must be on the computer one at a time. That way there is no need for additional accounts or passwords unless the software requires additional ones for more pages on the same site. Let them know that anything they create or write will be viewed by other family members. Post a list of passwords on the wall next to the computer so that everyone has easy access to them.
  • Encourage the creative use of blogs and social networking sites such as MySpace. Let your children know that learning how to use this technology is an important part of their education. Have them show you the layout and design of a blog they have created or the MySpace page they have put up.
  • Make every attempt to have the computer replace the television as a way to socially interact with other family members. Play music, watch video, and create photo albums together as a family.
By following these 5 tips your children will become accustomed to the computer as a place of social interaction instead of a place of solitude. If you have an additional computer, set it up as a place to do homework and word processing, but without an Internet connection. If you have a home office make a rule that no one is to use that computer because it is strictly for your job. Your children will learn proper safety rules for Internet use while still learning the importance of using technology in their lives.

Knowledge, Education, Learning and Thinking: What Does It All Mean? (Part One)

Why Think?

Thinking takes place on at least three levels: autonomic, reactive and deliberative. Each involves a specific process that the brain goes through to effect targeted and desired outcomes. While the first two are done without conscious effort, deliberative thinking cannot be done without it. Any one who has tried knows how demanding and draining it can be. Its a process that many of us have a hard time staying in long enough to produce anything different from what we think we already know. Often, at the beginning of the process of deliberative thinking, we shut it down by saying to ourselves, I already know that! This causes the mind to close and interest to wane. When this happens any curiosity we may have regarding the truth about ourselves and the universe does not stimulate us sufficiently to use our minds in the necessary ways to obtain it.

In the context of the work environment, sometimes the work we do doesnt require us to think in order to perform our daily tasks. We are instructed (trained) how to perform our responsibilities and are judged simply by how well we do them. Nothing beyond doing our jobs is requested of us.

Sometimes the work we do requires us not to think in order to do it well. Were told that were not paid to think, just to do our jobs the way we are told to do them. Anything beyond that is unwelcome input. Consequently, many people do not use their ability to think in ways that move them into greater realms of opportunity, creativity and productivity. If its not going to get us anything except a reprimand or a pink slip, why try to think more than we need to?

What about the places where were supposed to learn how to think and the benefits of regularly doing so? Even though most educational systems make noble attempts to instruct students in the ways of thinking well the daily routine and mechanics of teaching eventually overwhelms the best intentions of educators and administrators alike. Students exit from the system with some valuable information but not a very clear understanding of how to knit it all together into a meaningful whole that has beneficial ramifications for both the students and the societies in which they live.

Most of what we do on a daily basis doesnt involve much in the way of our brainpower. Routine and habit are shortcuts to action without thinking. Theyre what you do when youre not thinking about what youre doing. So, why think?

The Purpose of Thinking

The Seventeenth Century French Philosopher, Rene Descartes began his exhaustive investigation into the meaning of life with what to him was the only undeniable fact of life: the human ability to think. The Cartesian method of philosophical inquiry was revolutionary because it was the first to use shared concrete, everyday experiences of life, like thinking, to construct an understanding of the meaning and significance of human existence. Descartes dictum, Cogito, ergo sum, (I think, therefore, I am) was a whole new way of thinking about life by grounding it in thought.

If Descartes is correct that because I can think I therefore exist as a human being, then the question arises, if I know that I am, is this the same as knowing who I am? The answer is no. Just because I know I exist doesnt mean that I know much about myself. Your ability to think gives evidence that you are. The task of actually thinking is to learn who you are and how you can be the Self you were born to be.

Meander, a Fourth Century BC Greek philosopher, said that the basis of civilization was for citizens to know themselves, and that this meant, to get acquainted with what you know and what you can do. He assumes that all human beings have within them, by virtue of their being alive, knowledge born of their unique manifestation of life. In the Eighteenth Century AD, the English poet, philosopher and lexicographer, Dr. Samuel Johnson, would perfectly summarize this philosophy of knowledge when he wrote, human beings need to be reminded more than they need to be taught. The activity of thinking reminds you of what you innately know but have forgotten. Thinking is the process by which you uncover your Self and its potential and by which you discover creative ways to apply what you already know to being your Self within the context of your community of life. When you spend time thinking, you afford yourself the opportunity to get acquainted with your innate knowledge and with what you can do with that self-knowledge.

The Problem of Education

The primary purpose of employing your ability to think, therefore, is not merely to exist but to exist in a specific, unique way. How this is done depends on how the individual is taught to think. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), one of the foremost thinkers of the Enlightenment, remarked, science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life. He described his approach to education as organizing life when he said, the science I teach is how one might occupy his proper place in the universe. He was undoubtedly aware of the ancient teaching of Confusius: Do not worry about holding high position; worry rather about playing your proper role.

The best teachers I had throughout my formal education and beyond were those who not just caused me to think but who helped me to learn the purpose of thinking. Thinking was not done merely to arrive at solutions to problems and answers to questions but was to be done to know myself and to learn how to be myself in the world as a unique presence. Knowing myself through thinking leads to acting as that unique Self and not as a mimic of any other even though some, if not all of my actions might be similar to others in appearance and outcomes.

John Ruskin, a Nineteenth Century English social critic, said, Education does not mean teaching people to know what they do not know; it means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. A good education teaches you how to use your ability to think so that you can behave in the ways that emanate from your uniqueness as a person and that consequently lead to your being a success as that person. Thinking shapes, directs and expands the capacity to behave in the particular ways that lead to personal accomplishment and significance.

In modern times, especially in Western education models, students are seen as proverbial empty vessels sitting at the feet of fuller, older, wiser, learned professional educators who empty their knowledge into those empty heads thereby filling them with what somebody else knows. During the socialization process of teaching children how to exist in a particular culture, the system of education serves to provide the psychological structures for social homogenization by imparting the wisdom of the ages, knowledge handed down from previous generations and that is deemed that everyone should know. This most certainly is a vital function of education. However, when this approach becomes the primary emphasis of education, as it most often appears to be in academic institutions throughout the West, it translates into teaching students what, not how to think.

The late 19th early 20th Century English philosopher, mathematician, and writer, Bertrand Russell, was no fan of formal educational systems and said so when he commented that education was one of the chief obstacles to intelligence and freedom of thought and that men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education. He would agree that much of what passes for education is nothing more than the simple transmission by others of what they believe is important for students to be taught which often has nothing to do with the learners. His comment suggests that he saw the main purpose of contemporary formal education to be to mold children and young adults into an image that conformed to and reflected the prevailing culture. Education was the process by which people became like each other instead of becoming their unique Selves.

Russell would concur that content often lacks context, meaning that teaching frequently doesnt involve instructing students how to determine the veracity, viability, worthiness and usefulness of what is learned. It winds up being mere data dumping with little, if any attempt to help students connect the dots among the enormous array of data being offered from multiple sources and perspectives. Ben Hecht (1893-1964), an American author and dramatist, described the significance of context well: Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock. The education process is filled with billions of seconds and pieces of information that, all being emphasized as important to know, serve more to cloud than clarify the meaning of time and what happens within it. It emphasizes the threads not the tapestry, the parts not the whole.

John Locke (1632-1704), the British philosopher and medical researcher, wrote, till a man can judge whether they be truths or not, his understanding is but little improved, and thus men of much reading, though greatly learned, but may be little knowing. If thinking is taught to be the process by which the thinker is able to accurately discern right from wrong, truth from falsity, authenticity from disingenuineness, then merely learning new information is not the way this can be done. Locke intimates how we can learn to judge whether they be truths or not when he penned, reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.

Reading is an indispensable method of education. However, as Albert Einstein observed, reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking. Sir Arthur Helps (1813-1875), English writer and dean of the Monarchs advisory council, agreed with such sentiment when he wrote, reading is sometimes an ingenious device for avoiding thought. So reading, an essential means of education, can be a detriment to creative thinking. (I hope this is not the case as you read this article!).

The problem is that formal education offers no heuristic that students might use to organize and focus their thinking about everything they learn or to help them discover how to practically apply what they learn to the adventure of living. How often did I scurry between classes in college going from biology to philosophy, physics to religious studies, psychology to sociology knowing the content of the courses but without understanding how they all might be mutually corroborative and collaborative in providing a comprehensive foundation for innovative thinking about how to better live and enjoy my life? It took at least a couple of decades for me to even begin to appreciate the intrinsic symbiosis of the volumes of knowledge I had acquired throughout my higher education experience. Today, a couple of decades later still, my thinking is consumed with and consummated by discovering the interconnections among the pieces of information I have floating around in my head as I attempt to purposefully link the data dots into the big picture of my personal reality. This is more than mere data mining, it is data melding. It is this principle of information integration that should, but often does not, guide all educational endeavors.

Commenting on the rapid profusion of information throughout the early Twentieth Century, the American poet, e e cummings, paraphrasing a verse from Samuel Taylor Coleridges The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, put it succinctly when he wrote, data, data everywhere but not a thought to think. Without the context, the big picture, the organizing principles of how to coordinate and use what we know, whatever we know will only take us away from ourselves by pointing to all that is outside us as the means of finding ourselves and the purpose of our lives. Our proper place in the universe is obscured and eludes us because weve not been provided, or have not diligently pursued the proper context within which all of what we know can be brought together to make our lives sensible and centered.

We cannot occupy a place we have not recognized as ours alone to occupy. Nor can we properly occupy that unique place until we have properly prepared ourselves with authentic, honest, abiding self-knowledge. Formal education, by providing massive amounts of asynchronous, external information, unwittingly becomes the chief cause of the obfuscation and cluttering up of the Self. Self-knowledge gets lost amidst the din of seemingly competing voices and ideas. Consequently, the Self becomes disjointed, disharmonious and disquieted for it has not found its proper place in the universe. It becomes as a prism refracting the various inputs it receives into even more detailed yet diffused bits of data.

Being overwhelmed with the prospect of learning what we believe we need to know and then applying it appropriately, many of us simply give up trying to think in the ways we could. Ironically, we have been educated out of thinking. Ayn Rand said it perfectly, man's basic vice, the source of all his evils, is the act of unfocusing his mind, the suspension of his consciousness, which is not blindness, but the refusal to see, not ignorance, but the refusal to know.

Can education be directed to actually help human beings find their proper place in the universe? How can we connect the dots of our variegated and vast knowledge? How can we make it all assimilate into a common core of comprehension? Is it possible to turn the education process from an ego-driven give and take (where one ego gives information and other egos esteem themselves on how much they can take and then give back on exams) into a nobler endeavor that edifies by elucidating the humanity with which we must live for the brief while we are alive?

The paradigm that will help us bring it all together and coordinate our fragmented knowledge into clear understanding is the one that guided great civilizations of the past: know yourself first. The constituent elements of knowledge coalesce into a unified whole only after you get acquainted with your innate knowledge about yourself. Then all subsequent information that you acquire will gather to weave the larger tapestry of your unique presence within space and time. Only then will your education experience be as a crucible into which discontinuous data is poured but out of which holistic, useful and beneficial knowledge emerges.

Clank clank clank! It should bring a smile to remember those old days when we had to use a typewriter to type business letters and sales correspondence. Overnight, it seems, our typewriters morphed into bullet-speed word processors. Business networking tools have also evolved in recent years to offer us new and improved opportunities to greet and meet new prospects, keep in touch with clients, and to organize our contact lists. Lets take a look at some of these new and widely used networking tools

A computer is a must for most businesses. Specialized contact management programs assist in several networking areas making prospecting and contact follow up easier. Programs such as ACT!, Goldmine, Maximizer, and Outlook have various features that stores and organizes our contacts records and can help organize our networking schedules. Personally, I have used ACT! faithfully for the last seven years in business. I simply load the networking contacts business card information into the ACT! program once I return from a networking event. The next time I need to send that contact a letter or make a call, their contact information instantly appears on my computer screen.

Other tools used by the new-age networker include PDAs- Personal Digital Assistants such as Palm devices. Use these tools to review saved notes containing detailed information about people you network with. It is possible to synchronize the notes and contact records that are stored in some PDAs with the contact software used in your desktop computer. An example would be ACT! This program will update your PDA with the last records installed and the PDA will do the same for your computer Its as simple as a click of a button! Imagine how you can tighten a relationship by meeting a contact who has forgotten your name, however, with the aid of a PDA, you quickly search for that contacts name and for a detailed note about who they are. It is also possible to set appointments and check schedules instantly at a networking event with the help of a PDA.

No matter how many space-age gadgets and tools we use to help with our networking, we should be very clear about the significance of one tool in particular. Hair Loss Prevention- Why Do Castrated Men Never Go Bald?

The best start to preventing hair loss is understanding the basics of hair: what it is, how it grows, what system malfunctions can cause it to stop growing.

Most common hair loss comes under what has been commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). Although referred to as MPB, females suffer a similar syndrome, so it is more properly called androgenetic alopecia. Although hair loss is not life or health threatening, it can cause serious problems with a persons psyche and self-confidence. There has been no absolute cure found for hair loss, and many factors of hair loss are hereditary, however there are several preventative measures one can take to maintain healthy hair and scalp.

Although both men and women can suffer significant hair loss, over 50% of men will suffer with Male Pattern Baldness (MPB), also known as androgenetic alopecia, at some point in their lives. The reason behind hair loss is a genetically inherited sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and 5-alpha-reductase. The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone, a male hormone, to DHT, the substance identified as the end-cause for hair loss.

Hair loss has been noticed and studied throughout the ages, and some interesting discoveries were made in ancient times. For one it was noticed that eunuchs: those males without genitals-never went bald. Men who were castrated as a result of accidents in battle also never went bald. This was the first indication that testosterone had something to do with hair loss. It has also been found that the more recessive the hair gene, the more propensity toward baldness one has.

Some common myths have arisen concerning hair loss. Because of medical advancements many of these myths are being addressed and corrected. For starters, although androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness is genetic and therefore can be hereditary, it is not passed down through only your mothers side of the family. Either side of the family can pass down the genetic disposition toward baldness. Also, contrary to old family tales, wearing hats does not cause baldness either.

Beyond the genetic propensity of certain people toward hair loss, there seems to be various dietary triggers that activate the process, a notion that is promising since this can be controlled.

The effects of high-fat diets and the increase of DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), a chemical produced by the body found to cause hair loss, is not conclusive at this time. However, there does seem to be a connection; as societies that consumed relatively low-fat diets such as pre-World War II Japan experienced almost no pattern baldness, whereas in post-World War II Japan there is an increase in pattern baldness as their society consumes a higher fat diet. In fact, Asian and African men in their native countries traditionally suffer very little Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). Although when the same peoples come to North America, they begin to develop MPB.

Because people of all races and ethnicities tend to develop MPB or androgenetic alopecia, yet do not exhibit these tendencies before moving to America, changes in diet may be a leading contributing factor. Diets high in fat do increase testosterone, which is the main component in DHT. More research needs to be done on this topic to reach conclusive evidence, although it certainly could not hurt to lower ones fat intake.

There are a number of foods and substances to avoid and limit the intake of. Substances such as alcohol, caffeine, sugar and nicotine can deplete the body of nutrients and raise adrenal levels, which will cause a chain reaction of producing more androgen and causing hair loss. High levels of saturated fat and cholesterol rich foods are also linked to increased DHT levels and their consumption should be limited. Additionally, common table salt has been linked to hair loss. And the average diet provides the recommended amount of sodium intake; therefore, salt should never be added to food. However, when using salt for seasoning during cooking, be sure to use salt with Iodine being that it is a nutrient that is vital to hair growth as well, unless you are a regular consumer of seafood, which contains high levels of Iodine.

Although hair loss can be caused by many other variables, lack of proper nutrition will assuredly cause hair loss in many people. Fortunately, adopting a proper diet that includes the proper nutrients can reverse hair loss caused by malnutrition. One thing for certain, regardless of whether your hair loss was caused by malnutrition or not, adopting a healthier diet will help the function of other areas of the body.

There are some methods that have been used that prevent hair loss on some people, in addition to the dietary improvements, there are some naturopathic remedy suggestions. Massage and aromatherapy have been used with some success. In minor cases of temporary hair loss, hair growth can be stimulated by massage, since blood and oxygen flow to the scalp must be healthy in order for hair to grow. A blend of six drops each of lavender and bay essential oils in a base of four ounces of either almond, soybean or sesame oil massaged into the scalp and allowed to sit for 20 minutes has been used by aroma therapists to stimulate the scalp. Once the mixture is in the scalp for 20 minutes, wash your hair and scalp with your normal shampoo mixed with three drops of bay essential oil. Massaging the scalp in general for a couple of minutes a day can stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles and in mild cases stimulate some hair growth. Of course, one must be careful to be gentle when massaging and not tug at the hair or use the fingernails when massaging the scalp. If one is concerned about fingernails getting in the way due to extra long fingernails, there are several options. One is a flat-handed massage, which while not as effective as the finger massage can provide some circulatory benefits and results.

There are several electric massagers on the market that have an attachment for scalp massaging as well. An oriental method called Qi Gong (pronounced Chi Kung) has been used to increase circulation to the scalp and face also. The fingers should be placed at the center of the skull base and then begin to tap approximately 30 times. Work your way outward toward the ears continuing to tap gently. After reaching the ears go back to the center of the skull a little higher up and work your way around to the ear region. Keep going up about eight levels, each time repeating the process.

There is a definite connection between the prostate and hair loss for men, and therefore a connection between breakthroughs in BPH treatments developed and their effectiveness in restoring hair growth. There have been some herbalists that have experimented with the herb Saw Palmetto in order to block the production of DHT in treating BPH. Although most studies of Saw Palmetto have been for the treatment of prostatic disease, more recent studies have been conducted on its effectiveness in treating loss. The herb has been found to work in fighting benign prostatic disease by lowering levels of DHT, which is a known cause of androgenetic alopecia. Studies have shown Saw Palmetto extract is an effective anti-androgen and therefore there is promise for its effectiveness as an effective treatment for hair loss prevention.

Rosemary and sage are two herbs that have shown benefit traditionally when used externally. It is suggested that to promote a clean scalp, stimulation of the hair root, and thickening hair one should boil together in water rosemary, sage, peach leaf, nettle and burdock. Then strain the loose herbs from the liquid and use the liquid to wash the hair daily. Also recommended is steeping one ounce of ground rosemary, two ounces of ground sage, and a half ounce of ground nettles in one pint of ethyl alcohol for a week, straining the solution and adding one ounce of castor oil and one ounce of water to the liquid. This is said to make a great hair lotion to apply at night before bed or just before shampooing.

Hair is a living protein, and as with any living part of our bodies we must be sure to maintain proper health to optimize our chances of maintaining a healthy head of hair. Proper nutrition is vital to maintaining healthy hair, since the hair is a living and growing part of the bodys system. Viewing it in this manner can help us to treat our bodies different and raise expectations through proper care. A healthy balanced diet, occasionally with the help of vitamin and mineral supplements and exercise are all key components to a healthy regimen of maintaining healthy hair.

There is an obvious link to hair loss and prostatic health and this only increases the pace of hair loss discoveries. Most treatments for prostatic diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) also have the pleasant side affect of growing hair on the heads of those taking it. With the pace of research and discoveries today, there is a great deal of optimism in the field of hair loss prevention and treatment. Hair is an important part of our dress and appearance, therefore a large part of our self-esteem. It is likely that there are answers for your situation presently or coming in the near future.

Remember, the restoration of hair growth is not an overnight process. The process takes time regardless of the method chosen. Be patient and follow as much of the advice given by professionals as possible. Keep in mind that the body is a system, and it is the abuse of this system by food intake and environmental causes that lead to most common hair loss.

Can You Reduce Your Risk of Breast Cancer?

We hear it all the timelose weight for your health. Few people however, realize the extent to which this is critical to their physical well-being and ultimately their life expectancy.

In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured a study finding that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially among young adults. The researchers compared Body-Mass Index (BMI) to longevity and found a correlation between premature death and higher BMIs. For example, a 20-year-old white male, 510 weighing 288 pounds with a BMI of greater than 40 was estimated to lose 13 years of his life as a result of obesity.Jamie McManus, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. and author of Your Personal Guide to Wellness notes that while this study referenced extreme levels of obesity, there are still millions of overweight people in developed countries with a life expectancy rate that is three to five years less than their healthy-weight counterparts. She also estimates that there are 600,000 obesity related deaths each year in America.

Just how does obesity shorten our lifespan? The answer to this question is complex, yet there is a clear link between obesity and the development of cancer. An extensive study conducted by the American Cancer Institute involving 750,000 people showed that obesity significantly increased the risk of cancer developing in the following organs: breast, colon, ovaries, uterus, pancreas, kidneys and gallbladder.

Michael Thun, MD, vice-president of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society (ACS) says one reason obesity may raise cancer risk is because fat cells produce a form of estrogen called estradiol that promotes rapid division of cells, increasing chances of a random genetic error while cells are replicating, which can lead to cancer. In addition, fat centered around the abdomen may increase insulin and insulin-like growth factors in the blood, which may increase cancer risk.

"Women who are obese after menopause have a 50% higher relative risk of breast cancer," notes Thun, "and obese men have a 40% higher relative risk of colon cancer. Gallbladder and endometrial cancer risks are five times higher for obese individuals.There is evidence that cancer rates in developed countries are increasing at 5 to 15 times faster than developing countries. A major contributor to this alarming reality has proven to be diet. In populations where the diet consists mostly of fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains in contrast to the typical Western diet of fatty meats, refined flours, oils and sugars the risk of cancer is much lower.

The interaction of diet and the development of cancer is an active field of research and Dr David Heber, M.D., Ph.D. and author of What Color is Your Diet, says It appears that diet has its most significant effects after the cancer has already formed, acting to inhibit or stimulate the growth of that cancer. At the risk of oversimplifying a complex set of interactions, the typical Western diet that leads to obesity may actually act to stimulate the growth of cancer cells.It is never too late to improve your health through healthful eating and adopting a more health-giving lifestyle. Here are simple steps to follow which can make an immediate improvement to your health and vitality.

1. Check your Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if weight has become health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60% of Americans are overweight, defined as having a BMI (a ratio of height to weight) over 25. Of those, nearly half (27%) qualify as obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more. In 1980, just 15% of Americans were considered obese. You can check your BMI at the website below.

2. Match your diet to your bodys requirements. If you eat and drink more calories than your body requires you will put on weight. Learn to control calories and portion sizes, make recipes leaner, and eat infrequently from fast food restaurants. Also learn how to snack with healthful choices.

3. Color your diet with a large variety of colorful, cancer-fighting fruit and vegetables. There are seven different color ranges of both fruit and vegetables and by choosing between 5 to 9 daily serves from a wide range of fruit and vegetables, we are extending our consumption of cancer (and other disease) fighting nutrients.

4. Eat lean protein with every meal. Protein provides a powerful signal to the brain providing a longer sense of fullness. The right source of protein is essential to controlling your hunger with fewer calories and necessary to maintain your lean muscle mass. Choices of protein should be flavored soy shakes with fruit; the white meat of chicken and turkey, seafood such as shrimps, prawns scallops and lobster and ocean fish or vegetarians may prefer soy based meat substitutes.

The study concluded that the support of a weight loss coach can significantly improve weight loss results.

Being overweight or obese has been identified next to smoking, as the most preventable major risk to developing cancer. Even small weight losses have been shown to have beneficial health effects. So its never to late to start and you can never be too young or too old to be concerned about your health and do something about achieving a more healthy weight.
