Protect Against Prostrate Cancer with Nutrition

One of the most common male cancers is prostate cancer, 50% to 70% of men in their 70s have evidence of prostrate cancer but only one in ten develop prostrate cancer symptoms. The exact cause of prostrate cancer is not known, but it is linked to age, diet and lifestyle and testosterone metabolism.

Because prostrate cancer is slow growing the initial symptoms do not show, later symptoms such as frequent urination especially at night, slow urinary stream, pain whilst urinating, a feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder after urination, dribbling after urination and sometimes blood in the urine are all signs of prostrate cancer. If prostrate cancer is left to spread other symptoms include weight loss, pain in the bones, fatigue and anaemia.

A change in diet can help with and to protect against prostrate cancer. Cut down on animal fats, include plenty of fibre in the diet and consume lots of fruit and vegetables. Anti-prostrate cancer foods are soy products, rice, green and yellow vegetables, seafood such as oysters, bran, whole grains, shiitake mushrooms, pulses, garlic, pumpkin seeds, tomatoes, nuts, seeds (flaxseed), cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and oily fish. Cut down on alcohol and meat consumption and try to maintain a healthy weight.

The Quickest, Surest Path To Fiction Writing Success

There is a path to fiction writing success that is quick and sure, even obvious. It's a path that's simple to explain. In fact, I'm going to explain it in this short article. And when I'm finished, most of you who read this will nod and say to yourselves, "I knew that." Then you'll move on without giving it another thought. And you won't do it.

And that will be a shame.

As with any profession, writing good fiction requires a learning curve. It begins with the very basics - the rules of proper grammar. From there, you'll want to learn all the aspects of storytelling. These can include everything from setting to character development, from dialogue to plot, and more. And when you become comfortable in your knowledge of storytelling, you'll want to learn about the business end of writing ... how to build your career, working with agents, what all those contract clauses mean, etc. Learning will be a life-long journey.

But if you learn all of the above, inside and out, even become an expert at it, it won't mean a thing toward writing successful fiction unless you do one more thing.

You know what it is, don't you?

Yes.

You have to write, and you have to write everyday.

It doesn't matter how knowledgeable or how talented you are. If you don't write regularly you'll never be successful. Having edited a newsletter, a small press magazine, and several anthologies, I can tell you from experience, it's not the most talented writers who succeed. It's the most persistent writers. The writers who work on their craft with a passion. Who pour their souls into their work.

And it's not how much time you have, it's the routine that matters. Writing success comes from placing your butt in the chair and putting words down on a piece of paper or your computer screen on a daily basis. It doesn't matter if you only have fifteen minutes a day, as long as you fill that time writing.

The best way to do this is to make an appointment with yourself, set a specific time everyday that's reserved for nothing but writing. It might be the first thing in the morning before the rest of the family wakes up. It might be during your lunch hour, or late at night after everyone else is in bed. It doesn't matter, as long as it's the same time everyday, and the only thing that happens is that you write.

By the way, researching isn't writing. Plotting isn't writing. Developing a character isn't writing. Those are all important aspect of developing good stories, and they need to be done, but they are not writing. Don't let them get in the way. It's easy to get caught up in all the details of your story without ever actually putting a word on paper.

So there you have it.

The quickest, surest path to fiction writing success.

Write everyday.

Sounds easy, doesn't it?

And you already knew it, didn't you?

So now the question is this: what are you going to do about it?

How to Sense Low Levels of Asbestos in Your Daily Environment

My discovery came to me by accidentally removing an asbestos material in my home. The resulting condition of the whole house after this accident left me with a sore chest, dry and unbearably iching skin and eyes. My wife complained of extreme thirst and my oldest son, age 14, developed severe asthma. This all continued for five to six months. During this time I tried desparately to determine if we were living in an unsafe level of asbestos. The material that I had removed was tested and found to contain 20% crysitile asbestos. Air sampling proved to be unreliable because the area had been ventilated so well. But the furnishings, carpets, walls and all other personal belongings were covered the remnants of the demolition.Everyone wanted to play down the seriousness of the situation, but, to me it was obviously not a healthy environment.

So, I set out to try to logically deduce, with a knowledge of the physical properties of asbestos, when I encountered the substance as I attempted to clean every surface and item in every room of the house.

That was fifteen years ago. During that time, as I learned more about where we all encounter asbestos materials on a daily basis. I made mental notes concerning my and others' reactions to these encounters. Many situations have arisen ranging from sore throats and skin conditions(acne and basil cell skin cancer) to asthma, pneumonia and death. I don't have clinical proof of these claims I've made, except to say "if it looks, walks and sounds like a duck it probably is a duck". Many times clinical trials are verified by producing the same results in subsequent testing. Deductive reasoning can also be verified in the same way. If the same results are observed again and again after low level exposure to these remnants then that is proof to me.

Without writing a book, I wouldn't have the space to detail every observation I've made during this period, but I can assure you that no contact with asbestos is without a possible adverse health consequence.

Asbestos is a very lightweight chrystal-like material with highly static electrical properties. It often produces a static discharge like when one is shocked by touching the metal switch plate or door knob in their home. It often leaves a bitter-salty taste in your mouth. It can stay airborne for days at a time. It absorbs moisture and produces a very dry environment (which only makes the static electric situation worse.)

The loose material may be accidentally contacted in a number of building types and situations.

Many buildings built before 1977 have vinyl asbestos floor tile. No one can avoid walking on this, if they enter the building. This is fine if the floor is well maintained. Look out for broken or worn and never waxed tile. This applies to any location in the building, commercial or residential. Closets are very seldom waxed. Items stored there will accumulate certain amounts of this substance.

Anytime an older building is renovated the possibility exists for a number of materials containing asbestos to be encountered. The contractor does't always do the right thing. In many instances it is cheaper to pay the fine if he is caught. So he just tears it out and throws it in the dumpster or hauls it to the dump himself. As a consequence, many newly renovated stores have a certain amount of this dust on the shelves and new merchandise in the store.

There are many more instances of contact for which I don't have the time to detail here, but basically, with the characteristics of the material, knowledge of where you may encounter the substance and many hours of observation (I've been in construction over thirty years), you too can make the same deductive conclutions that I have made.

In subsequent articles I intend to go into detail on the unique physical properties of asbestos and how this promotes detection in your hair and clothes. In future articles I would also like to expand on the many other health effects I've noticed, such as acne, which could benifit many young adults and a number of people who continue with this complexion problem into adulthood.

Home Loans and Mortgages - Time to Consolidate Loans?

Home equity loans and lines of credit are useful tools for homeowners. They allow the homeowner to borrow against the value of his or her home for all kinds of purposes home improvement, debt consolidation, vacations, and more. The loans, backed by the value of the house itself, come with attractive interest rates and the added bonus of tax deductible interest. That interest, however, is often variable, adjusting up and down with changes in market conditions. At the moment, conditions are such that interest rates for adjustable rate loans are increasing while rates for fixed-rate loans are still fairly stable. This is probably a good time for homeowners with variable rate equity loans to consider consolidating their primary mortgage and home equity loan into a single entity.

The ideal candidate for such a consolidation would be a homeowner who has a variable rate home equity loan, rather than a line of credit or an equity loan at a fixed rate. A line of credit is sort of a revolving loan, with an amount that may be drawn, as needed, time and again, much like a credit card loan. A home equity loan would represent a fixed amount of money borrowed for a specific length of time. To consolidate a home equity loan and a primary mortgage, the home would have to be refinanced with a new mortgage issued for the combined amounts of both loans. There are costs associated with this, so homeowners should consider the following:

  • Refinancing costs It may cost several thousand dollars to combine two loans into one. A home appraisal will be required, along with paperwork fees, filing fees, and possible points paid at closing. A homeowner should make sure that he or she will remain in the home long enough to offset the additional costs of refinancing, otherwise the savings of consolidation are lost.
  • Interest rate on the primary mortgage If you have financed or refinanced your home during the last three years, your primary mortgage rate may already be lower than the rate you could get today. You dont want to raise your overall interest rate just to consolidate the smaller amount of money from a home equity loan.
  • The amount of money owed on the home equity loan The larger the amount of money owed on the equity loan, the greater the benefit of consolidation. You wouldnt want to refinance your home over an equity loan balance of $1000, but you might want to do so if the balance is $50,000.
  • Market conditions change regularly, but now is a good time for anyone with a variable rate home equity loan with a considerable balance to consider consolidating the equity loan and the primary mortgage into a single loan. If you arent sure if you can benefit from this, you may wish to consult with your lender.

Dental Practitioners Become Podcasting Pros in 7 Simple Steps

Do you value community outreach activities? Are you looking for better ways to communicate withand educateyour patients, your peers, or even the media? If your goal is to deliver your message to more people, more effectively, more often, then I have the answer youve been looking for and its powerful, fun and remarkably simple.

Why not use the cutting edge technology of podcasting to spread awareness about the importance of proper oral health? Stay with me nowif you have a slight case of technophobia, thats okay. Im confident that if your practice has the technical know-how to produce an online newsletter, then learning to integrate podcasting into your outreach activities will be a snap. And believe mepodcasting is the most innovative mass-communication vehicle to emerge in years, and will greatly increase the impact and reach of your message.

Lets begin with the basics. Think of a podcast as a radio program that anyone can download from the Internet. Put another way, a podcast is a digital file that is available to everyonevia free subscriptionover the web. Most podcasts are audio files only (like CDs), but video content can be added as well (like DVDs). The main advantage of podcasting over traditional broadcasting is that users can download these web files to their personal computers, mp3 players, and/or CDs, and then listen to them at their conveniencein their car, during their morning run, or even in your reception area.

More and more, podcasts are becoming recognized as the latest robust communication tool to harness the Internets power to reach a large number of listeners quickly. If your podcast contains valuable information, your listeners will share it with others, rapidly disseminating your message around the globe. Also, because podcasts use RSS (really simply syndication) technology, new episodes are delivered to your subscribers seamlessly. Once a listener subscribes to a podcast using iTunes or another similar service, that service automatically downloads new episodes as they are released, making it practically instantaneous and effortless for your audience to receive your message.

Putting together a professional-sounding podcast is easier than you might think. Since valuable content is paramount, the first step is to prepare interesting topics for your episodes. I suggest that you commit to producing bi-monthly episodes, meaning that you initially need only six topics per year. Once podcasting becomes part of your routine, increase your production to twelve topics per year. If you are already producing a paper or online newsletter for your patients, the most logical progression would be to reformat some of that content into podcasts. A good way to start is to identify topics that you could cover in more detail by talking about them in a podcast rather than writing about them in a newsletter.

For example, the most recent newsletter that my dentist emailed to me included an article about the dangers of periodontal disease, including information on how it may be connected to the development of heart disease, warning signs to watch out for, and recommended preventative actions. This is valuable information that I am interested in, and I am thankful to be on this mailing list. But imagine that I have received this information in the form of an audio podcast, personally recorded by my dentist, urging me to book an appointment for a much-needed checkup. I am immediately spurred to action! Speaking directly to your audiencein your own voice and with your own inflection, tone and spiritcreates a much more intimate connection with your patients. This relationship-building quality is inherent in audio, and its part of what makes podcasting so powerful.

If you have doubts about the widespread acceptance of digital audio files, consider this statistic: on April 9, 2007, Apple announced the sale of its 100 millionth iPod and more than 2.5 billion songs from the iTunes Music Store. Now consider that anyone can download podcasts from this same music store and listen to them via their mp3 player or their computer, or burn them to CD for free! As more and more people (including your patients) tune in to audio files via the web, offering them podcasts that complement and expand on the content of your existing newsletters provides you with another way to remind them about the importance of proper oral health and the services you provide.

So, what equipment and software do you need to record and produce a podcast? You can become a podcasting pro in just seven simple steps:

1.Verify that your PC is running Windows 2000, XP or Vista, and has the ability to play audio files.

2.Invest in a microphone. Altec Lansing makes decent products, some of which list for under $30, and are available at Future Shop. But I recommend splurging a little to improve your audio quality. Blue Microphones makes a great USB mic called the Snowball, which retails for $130 on the Canadian online Apple Store. (This mic will also work with your Windows PC.)

3.Download and install your recording software. Audacity is an excellent audio editor that is available for download from http://audacity.sourceforge.net. And you cant beat their price point: its free.

    4.Record and edit your podcast.

5.Partner with an online hosting service to set up a website specifically for your podcast. Liberated Syndication is extremely inexpensive and gives me everything I need. At $5 USD per month, I can lease 100 megabytes of storage space per month, which translates into about two hours of audio. This basic hosting account gives me unlimited bandwidth, meaning that even as my audience grows exponentially, my monthly cost never increases. LibSyn also provides me with easy-to-use templates for my podcasts website, and automatically generates and updates my podcasts RRS feed. Another, similar service worth considering is Go Daddy.

6.Upload your new podcast to your hosting service using their simple submission page. Completing the submission page is similar to sending an email. Simply type in the title of your podcast (like a subject line), add the description of your episode (like the body of your email), and include your mp3 file (as an attachment). You can even attach a corresponding image, if you like. Uploading your podcast stores the mp3 file online and makes it available to your audiencethey can download your podcast from your newly created podcast website.

7.Promote your podcast! This is as easy as sending an email announcement to your contact list with the URL of your podcasts website. But to take advantage of the various online podcast directories, you need to visit their websites and submit your podcasts RSS feed. You should never pay to be included in these directories, since the best onesincluding iTunes, Podcast Alley, Odeo, and Podcast Pickleare free.

For Mac users, these steps are even simpler, thanks to Garage Band and iWeb. As a Mac user myself, Id be happy to pass along some pointers to get you started.

Like you, I believe its important to remain connected with my client base, and as a lover of all things tech, I choose to use innovative approaches. I have successfully engaged the power of podcasting to promote my company in two weekly podcasts with rapidly growing success. And by following these seven simple steps, you too can become a podcasting pro!
